Asking the question on Motorhome Fun may be worth a try.

Just asking as I really don't know the 'rules'. Do you really have to operate the brakes on the towed car especially if you have 2 plus tonnes of motorhome towing a sub 1 tonne car? When I recovered my Smart (similar weight) I towed it with an A frame using my R Class and had no problems at all having just the towing car braking for both

I think, MM, it’s because the majority of toads, weigh more than 750kg. Whilst it might not be technically necessary to have the brakes active on the trailer, most vehicle manufacturers quote an unbraked towing limit of 750kg.
MHs, especially those on an Alko chassis, often have surprisingly low towing limits overall.

Hi
Any trailer above 750kgs must have an active braking system. A car towed on an a frame is classed as a trailer.
HD, good advice from DD above, there's loads of helpful info over on 'fun. If I could get away with it ok in Spain I'd still have a toad now. I used to tow a ford ka behind my chieftan and as it only had a 1000kg limit I was always over legally. Mine was from car a tow down in Poole but that was 10 years ago when over run braking was acceptable.

If brakes are fitted they must work, even if the weight of the trailer is below 750kg....
So even if you had a Toad below 750kg, it would still have to have a working braking system.

Hi HuskyDog, could I suggest you look at the website for two bars 2 tow cars http://www.tow-bars2tow-cars.com. Unfortunately they are near Grimsby so a little way from you.
Other than having my Aygo converted and two tow bars fitted by them to my MHs I have no commercial connection with the company. Their website gives you some indication of how the braking system works, as well as videos and pictures. They are easy to talk to and a quick phone call will get you a price. They also demonstrate at the MH shows.
I had my Aygo converted in July 2016 and had no problems whatsoever. In fact when I changed my motorhome they simply swapped the tow bar for a different model and only charged me the labour.
