Pay extra for towing a car

I know that some traditionalists won't like this discussion but we have a motorhome and regularly tow a car in the UK.

We recently tried to book a CL at £15.00 per night but when I said that we towed a car the price was increased to £20.00 as our Polo was considered to be an additional car.

We queried the additional cost as a car towing a caravan takes up the same amount of space as a motorhome but were told that the count is by engines and that other people on the site would complain about us getting an additional facility at no extra cost.  We don't understand!

Has any one else encountered this problem?

So say next year the club site is £30 and the CL £20 - which would you choose then?

I would look elsewhere  there is a world outside the club but I have to confess that for one night a year I have become too lazy to seek it out.

Good diversion, David! wink

But my point was that if those were the only 2 alternatives in the area (I'm thinking of the example I gave earlier ) would you be prepared to pay the £20 then?

For me M, I would pay the £20 BUT if I did you could be damn sure there wasn’t a non EHU site anywhere near there! 🤣🤣🤣 I normally can get a non EHU site virtually anywhere so a £20 site would have to be the only one for miles around! But yes, without being silly about it, if the extra miles to say a port  were going to cost me as much as staying on the CL I would do the sensible thing..... and if non EHU sites keep closing at the present rate I might find myself in that position! 🤣🤣

Of course there would have to be a bit of negotiation ! What discount do you offer for me not using your electricity? 🤣🤣🤣

In the situation I described the CL is not only cheaper but closer and more convenient for the port.  I am not hard up for £5 and obviously not going to "cut my nose off  ...   "but it doesn't alter the fact that in principle £15 is the upper end of what I consider reasonable for a nights parking.

Try overnight parking in York City centre with a car! It makes Rowntree Park look very cheap and very reasonable! And you get space for a caravan, awning, car and all the usual site facilities 'thrown in'. Yet some still complain about that!

RP does represent good value if you are interested in seeing York, if you have invested in the touring outfit of course. We had an interesting chat with a couple of Northern Irish chaps while we were there, they wanted to see more of Yorkshire, and were querying whether or not to do it from RP. We passed on lots of nice cheaper CLs and private sites for NY Moors and Dales area, they were in a small VW, so very mobile.

We use CLs at a wide range of prices, some as low as £3, but we won't go higher than £20 if we can help it. In Winter, Club Sites that stay open are often much better value than CLs, especially mid week. There are some very nice looking CLs with lots of extras, but we just don't get the value as we mainly use our own facilities, and aren't always bothered about having wifi.

AD for Portsmouth afternoon crossings, we use CAMC site at Morn Hill, Winchester. Between Easter and Mayday w/e, cost was about £15, and bus stop nearby for Winchester if staying more than 1 night.

Taking an existing CL "upmarket", or establishing one from scratch, could be part of a business model to try out the market for a much bigger site without the proportionally larger outlay. Also gets the local community gently used to caravans coming and going, established a precedent, etc without investing in toilet blocks, big power cable, etc.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of the CLs that have closed as such in recent years have actually become small commercial sites. Many of the Club sites that have closed still exist as caravan sites, though a lot of them now house statics.
