Opinions please on a Renault Master

Our continuing search for a motorhome has uncovered one that fits our criteria but it is based on a Renault Master. Google has produced the surprising statistic that this base vehicle accounts for only 3% of the european motorhome market compared with 83% for   SEVEL’s Fiat Ducato/Peugeot Boxer/Citroën Relay.

Should this be a concern and has anyone got experience of this vehicle?

The MH in question is an automatic.

Sorry, no experience of the Master but I'd choose that in preference to a Sevel based MH. 

I believe the reason most converters choose a Fiat/Peugeot is that they are relatively cheap and give more scope for a bigger profit margin. Most have a bolted on Alko chassis with a wider rear track. That's a two edged sword and presents problems when you need to find a garage with lifting ramps it'll fit on.

The Master is the same vehicle as the Vauxhall Movano and Nissan NV400. Take a look around at what white van man uses as a guide to what is popular and, arguably, best. I think you'll find the Merc Sprinter and Vauxhall high up on the list.

All I can add ,is that when I worked for a Vauxhall main dealer ,the Movano vans spent more time in workshop than They did on the road , and one courier company got rid of their fleet of movano's and replaced them with sprinters

I'm no great fan of Vauxhall but even less of the modern Sevel vehicles.

Yes, this should be a concern. The Renault Master dealer support does not match Fiat Professional in spread of outlets. So check out where you can get the servicing done bearing in mind it is a low mileage motorhome, not a high mileage delivery van. Consequently, it will need a different service schedule. Some motorhome dealers will service Fiat motorhomes [I don't know about Peugeots and Citroens].

In the commercial van market, the Master is seen as a competent workhorse, not quite up to the standards of the competition on cab comfort and quality - that's more likely going to be down to personal opinion.

Fiat dominate the motorhome market because the vans are cheap and designed with motorhomes in mind.

As you have highlighted, you need to bear in mind that all the major motorhome manufacturers build on either the Peugeot, Fiat and Iveco, and Mercs. Very few build on Renaults. That may be reflected when you come to dispose of the motorhome.

However, if I could get a Renault Master serviced within reasonable distance, I could live with the interior, I'd consider having one, especially if the habitation build was what I wanted.

Had a 2009 Renault Master based motorhome from new. 150bhp model 2.5dti. Would have another without hesitation. Mine's manual but I'd have the Auto if I could, just because I like driving autos. Have mine serviced at my local Renault Trucks dealer and found their service quick and reasonably priced
