Hi there, am new to Motorhomes and have bought a 1996 2.5TD 5 speed, Fiat Ducato Swift Royale but the gearbox has demised recently.  I am now struggling to find anyone who can recondition this gearbox.  Rumour has it that the gearbox from a Peugeot Boxer might possibly be compatible??  I am after any positive views on who might be able to assist / advise on how to fix my gearbox.  Thanks in desperate anticipation.

 HI

Gearboxes in motorhomes made by Peugeot/ Fiat/ Citroen in the late 90s early 00s are a notorous weak spot. There's lots of information on various forums and websites detailing the problems. The most common problems relate to water ingress and dodgy fifth gears.

The windscreen scuttle drains directly onto the gearbox and if left standing for long perios of time (as most motorhomes are) this finds its way into the grearbox, contaminating the oil and causing premature failure.

With regards 5th Gear - the 5th gear was added to an old 4 speed design and has a tendancy to become starved of oil causing failuire.

That said, I wouldnt call your gearbox failure premature as it has lasted 23 years!!!

To answer your question, the MK2 Fiat Ducato platform is the same as the Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Relay of the same vintage so the theory is that the gearboxes should be interchangeable. My advice, though, is to find a gearbox specialist who can rebuilt yours and maybe even provide a warranty. The risk with buying a second hand box is that you may buy one that is just as worn out as the one you replace.

I dont know your location but i would suggest you get Googling for a gearbox specialist. I am in Northern Ireland and i am aware of one specialist who will tackle it, namely Gardner Transmissions in Cullybackey. I am led to believe a rebuild costs about £1000.
