Do you really need an oven?

We have been caravanning since 1980 and are now switching to a motorhome.  Our early vans did not have an oven fitted.  Since having the luxury of an oven I find that I can remember only a few occasions that we have used it.  Now that a microwave comes as standard in most motorhomes do we we really need an oven?

Most of our travels are in Southern France and - usually - in warm sunshine so that we either eat cold food or cook something on an outdoor hot plate to avoid cooking smells indoors.

We are planning to buy an Auto-sleeper Stanton which comes with a full size oven.  I am wondering if I can persuade Auto-sleeper to build us one with usable storage in place of the oven. Has anyone else done this I wonder?

We need something to dust out every now and then -  never use it

Makes a good storage area for things, my electric multi cooker fits just nicely in it once I've removed the shelf smile

We have no inbuilt caravan oven, but in a moment of weakness we bought a portable electric mini oven from Argos for about £25. It lives under the caravan bed but comes out once or twice a year to warm up ready meals.

We have used our oven a few times over the last 10 years, the grillmore often, but OH is not that keen on a gas oven.

What we do make good use of is our £25 from Lidl electric fan oven/grill.  It is not particularly heavy, only 1300 watts, and can be used outside or inside.  We do cook in the oven frequently, so would not want to be without one.

We also use a multicooker, and outside we use an electric griddle plate instead of a BBQ.

Microwave is used occasionally, so would prefer to have one.

Many microwaves are fitted in a standard cupboard, if you would not use it, could it be removed and a door fitted instead Qashqui?

You do get some quite compact oven/grill things, we often see Dutch and German MHers and caravanners using them outside.

I suppose whether you want/need an oven very much depends on your style of touring. We use our van all year so the last thing we want to be doing in November/December/January is using an outdoor cooking method. Having a built in oven in your caravan or motorhome surely you don't want secondary cooking method which takes up even more storage room? When we go away for shortish periods we tend to raid the Waitrose ready meals section which either have to be cooked in the oven or in the microwave. For example tonight we have enjoyed Pork Loin Steaks with a cauliflower, cheese and onion crumble complete with new potatoes and green beans, what is there not to like!.  Longer trips away, particularly to Europe obviously require us to use local produce but even in the heat of the South of France we still us the in built oven.

In Europe the oven is just a storage facility for my multi cooker wink there is no way would I use the oven in the MH in the temps we have had over the last few years. Likewise I would not stand outside in the depth of winter to cook on a BBQ.

In the UK its a different matter, we tend to only tour UK in the winter  months so what we eat is different and then we would use the oven.
