I have a VW Tramsporter converted by Hillside leisure to a Birchover Campavan.

The V5 Registration document lists the body type as "campavan" and the vehicle category as N1.

On a recent trip through the Baltic Staes we were stopped at the Lithuanian /Polish border by the Customs, we had the V5, Insurance and MOT documents but were asked to produce the good vehicle document whish appapently we should have bought ( because of the N1 ) the fine should have been 288 Euros but were fortunate enough to be let off, however we were flouting the law in most countries we travelled thtough unknowingly, should this vehicle have a different classification other than N1 and if so how do I change it? or do i purchase a Vingnette as necessary.

N1 just states "Vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass not exceeding 3,5 tonnes."

Not sure what you mean by good vehicle document?

Presumable you bought the van as an ex goods vehicle and then had it converted? Best thing to do is take it up with the DVLA as it now should be classified as M1.

I Have now spokenwith Both The DVLA who said " The original vehicle - a VW Transporter was classified N1 and that classification will remain as it can be"unconverted " back to a Goods Vehicle,

Also having spoken to Hillside all of teir VW Conversions are classified N1 but the body type change to Motor home. and its still listed as a Light Goods Vehicle.

More research now on EU Laws on Goods vehicles will follow and i suspect that if we travel abroad agian then we will end up buying some form of Vingnette or permit, watch this space!!
