Add Blue has a shelf life of up to 12months (may have a use by date on container) 

it is not classed as a hazardous material ?

Must only be disposed of via local /national instructions 

Not into drains watercourses or the ground

Check with your local council enviroment office

You make a good point about the AdBlue in the tank. I dont know what size tank my car has but i drove 15,000 miles in 12 months before it needed refilling.

Interesting thread for me as I did exactly as the OP did. When I got the van I purchased some AdBlue so will have to check the sell by date!!! Useful reminder.

Could I share my experience. I bought a 10 litre bottle of Adblue and when it came to refilling found that pipe was not long enough to open the gate in the neck of the filler tube, so bought a 3.5 litre bottle, used that, decanting from the 10 litre bottle.

Then discovered that BP garages have an Adblue pump. The pipe is long enough and fits snugly with no spillage. Adblue is pumped In and the pump stops when full and it’s cheaper at the pump. For me now, no worries about sell by dates, spilling or not getting the pipe to open the gate.

The dash warning light gives plenty of notice when adblue is running low, another 1500 miles before limp mode. That works for me.

I will certainly look at garage forecourts with a view to topping up there when the time comes. It sounds as though I have a long way to go before it will need topping up.

It is a mixture of water and urea. It would not be significantly degraded in storage in solution as it is stable. It is about as stable as salty water so I really would not worry about it being 12 months old. Just give it a shake and tip it in.

If your car has 26k on the clock it's fair to say that some has been added at service. I've done about 15k in my ML but have added a gallon or 3 on an had hoc basis .... the car has never actually asked for any though. I believe it's possible to get a level check on later cars .... but not mine. 🤔

Our VW Touareg gets through a lot of the stuff, needs filled twice a year usually, don't think the tank for it can be that big, maybe 10 litres.  It is not filled by the VW dealer at service.  We do about 8-10k miles annually.
