Waste Pipes

I have seen some caravans onsite where the black convoluted waste pipe has been replaced by domestic smooth pipe. Has any one tried this and if so what are the advantages? if any. What size pipe fits, I have tried 32mm and that is slightly to big. A quick Google found a few posts on the subject  but no real insight only that the waste water flows away better.
