Trio awning pole attachments

Hi 

I went to show a couple how to put up the awning that came with the caravan they have just bought. Everything seemed OK but where the poles attached to to the awning at the caravan side had me confused! The hole for the hooks on the poles face sideways instead of upwards as I would have expected so they are not secure and are liable to fallout easily. I am sure this can't be correct so feel we have either got something missing or we are just  a pair of idiots! Can anyone put us right?
