I've not seen those before, only some continental touring sites where touring vans are parked under a corrugated iron roof shelter, and I've always presumed they were to combat extreme heat (i.e. direct sunshine) in places like Spain & Portugal.

Your photo shows a double skinned roof, similar to the idea of a 'Safari Roof' that used to be an option on some old Land Rover models that were used in Africa.
