Failing things on my caravan

Hi all

So I've been caravanning most of my life from my parents taking me away as a child in a very basic Sprite Alpine in the 1970's/80's through to my adult family life where we are now on our 4th caravan in nearly 30 years of being a member. Our most recent purchase being a Sterling Eccles in 2016. Bought brand new and being a sizeable beast we paid extra to have the remote control mover installed to help make life much easier. This it did for the first three years no problem and then the troubles started. Found that it started to work when it felt like it. Fine I thought as at this point the mover was well under the five years that Powtouch provide as a warranty. So we it back to the dealer for a service and asked them to take a look at the problem which they immediately said was the leisure battery at fault. I was surprised but took the hit and invested in a new one (the old one really wasn't very old). Next outing our intrepid adventure began with the mover failing again and after chatting to my local dealer service department was told that when they had it in they couldn't make it go wrong so at this point I thought surely the way to go is direct to Powrtouch who were most helpful on the phone and decided to help with a speedy resolution it was a new control box that was required. (the bit inside the van not the remote!) So my box arrived and as told on the phone a very easy thing to fit with just six wired to connect which were very obvious luckily. Next holiday it failed yet again so another phonecall and Powrtouch said they would send an engineer to help with our problems. After many weeks of waiting one did eventually appear who then couldn't get the infernal thing to go wrong despite running it up and down where it's stored for at least an hour and a half.

So the story continues and next adventure surprise surprise it failed again. This time on the engineer's advice I got wise and filmed the problem and took pictures of the control panel lights. After a few weeks the engineer came out again and after another three hours (of my life I'll never get back) they decided one motor was failing so a new one was fitted. Now this was last December and bearing in mind by now my five year warranty had expired although as the original fault was never fixed Powrtouch had agreed to honour it. So with a combination of busy working and winter we finally took the van with our new motor on one side out at the end of May this year only to find yet again it has failed. Not only this but that also our Dometic fridge control panel on arriving on site would only work on 240 volts. Particularly unhelpful as we were staying on a CL with no electric!

On arriving home I called Powrtouch who were very quick to point out this fault is out of warranty but in my mind and experience the fault was never truly fixed! They would have saved themselves a great deal of hassle and trouble and my stress if they'd just fitted all new parts as I was led to believe they would after it continued to fail within the warranty.

Of course on calling the dealer about the fridge it was a case of touch the warranty on the fridge is only three years which then got me thinking where do I stand if a product fails outside the warranty but the product has at most been used for about 21 weeks (i.e less than six months) do I have a reasonable legal standing with the consumer goods act or do I have to "Suck it up" after spending about £20000 on a caravan?

Alongside the problems mentioned I have also had to replace the pump for the toilet flusher but I managed to do that myself and for not too higher cost but again should it have failed after such minimal use? It does call into question the quality of manufacturing in the industry as a whole perhaps?

Appreciate any advice althought in fairness to Powrtouch they are looking into it very slowly and as yet haven't they won't help or that they will! I did email the dealer with a standard consumer advice letter quoting consumer goods act which they didn't even reply to!

Your warranties are calendar based not usage based so think you're stuffed with that argument.

Oh dear I really feel for you I've also got a Sterling Eccles 2016 and a Powertourch Mover with almost identical problems.

I did find that if the battery was ever slightly below 12v the item would not work, so much so I've arrived on site only to find I could not move and had to wait until the mains cable had sufficiently charged the battery and then was able to site the van.

In the end the mechanic fitted the upgraded mover at a reduced price, since when I've had no problem other than when either battery is very low.
