Buying a French Caravan

I am considering buying a French caravan, and wonder how much of a problem it is pitching with the door on the "wrong" side.

None at all. CAMC pitching rules say you can pitch either nose in or rear in and MHs often park nose in leaving their hab door on the 'wrong' side. Some folk get picky and object to door facing door but most of us don’t bother. Just do what suits you with your continental van 👍🏻

We have a German caravan and a German motorhome, both with doors on the RHS, and have never had a problem pitching in the UK. Enjoy your French caravan.

Both our caravans were UK models, but our current MH is a continental design and we have not encountered problems which ever way round we wish to pitch. The only issue I can see is on a few CAMC sites with narrow awning pitches, where the car goes across the front. The pegs are located on the left hand side. Therefore if you wanted to put an awning up you would have no option but to go in hitch first.

In 20 years I've only ever owned caravans with the door on the wrong side. I have never come across a problem.

We have owned our Eriba for almost 20 years and the only issue that needs some thought is when parked in a lay-by or by the side of the road you have to take extra care when getting in and out as you will be next to the traffic.

Pitching in or out could be an issue for a caravan without a mover if there is an incline on the pitch.

We do most of our caravanning in mainland Europe or private UK sites and never experienced rules like the club’s. In fact in many instances we have pitched our small caravan across the pitch!

Never had a problem on club sites but have had several requests to go nose in on private sites. When I have said “no mover” there’s been a mixed response - help to push in, change of the allocated pitch, or just left to struggle!

I would advise telling private sites that the door is on the “wrong” side!
