We have just seen the forecast for a day when we’re planning to be away is for 47mph gusts of wind. We wondered whether anyone has any experience of being on a site in winds of this level and what, if any measures are necessary or whether you would advise not to go? Many thanks in advance.

It very obviously depends on the site arrangement.....i.e. bushes, walls, buildings which may break the wind.If on an open area site park with the front or rear into the wind and park the towing vehicle to act as a break.I have caravanned in winds up to 76 mph with no problem apart from being kept awake!

Just be aware of any potential damage causing structures like trees or poorly maintained buildings.

If you are on a club site you may not have much option of how to pitch. If on a CL then we have in the past found owners amenable to allowing us to park on lee side of a farm building to offer more protection.

We've just had near 40 mph gusts on an exposed site but the caravan stood up well. Disrupted sleep but never felt in danger. We did find more rattles from outside, such as the cover to an external gas point, which whilst staying closed still rattled so used some blu tack as a temporary sticking solution. Left the heki skylight cover half open which also stopped it rattling.

You really need to use a bit of commonsense. We have known people sleep in the car.

Whatever you do DON'T put an awning up in a gale!
