Battery problems

My leisure battery is not retaining its charge and obviously needs replacing. Due to it special size I cannot get one very quickly.

My caravan is sited and  is on a 240 volt supply. If I take the battery back to the van and fit it anyway , will the internal charging unit be sufficient to enable me to use the devices that require the 12 volt supply?

Generally the battery acts as a buffer and smoothing for the 12 volt charger and, in fact, some caravans will work without a battery although generally the manual will tell you to have a fitted battery. Of course, if the battery is faulty in some way it could be in danger of overheating and meltdown but if it is simply not holding charge for very long it should be OK.

Thanks for that prompt reply which is what i hoped for. I will take my Smart Charger withy me and give it a short charge before fitting it to the van.

I think I will still get a new one though - didn't want to pay through the nose at a dealer so it gives me time to source one.  Thanks again

Is your problem the battery is not retaining its charge over time in storage? I found this to be the case with mine and had everything checked out.

It turned out the water heater and heating control unit by the door was connecting by bluetooth to the heaters, essentially permanently messaging them with a 'hello I am here' message resulting in a small but continuous drain on the battery.

Pulling out the battery fuse when in storage solved the problem. A small solar panel attached to the skylight provides a small trickle of charge to the battery when in storage.
