For the past years we have always used Red Pennant insurance for health cover and vehicle rescue.

Our most recent visit to Portugal earlier this year unfortunately resulted in a long bout of Gastro Enteritus for myself.

Firstly we tried the local doctors practice which involved an extremely long walk to find. We then later had to visit a public hospital in Caceres Spain where I received treatment using our EIC card. We were required to pay for the prescribed medication and taxi bills to and from the Hospital .

The point I am raising here is there is a requirement in the insurance rules that require you to first visit a public hospital Using your EIC card. Wrongly we believed there would be a contact number for advice in the policy documents.

As you will see when the small print is read, you begin to suspect the purpose of paying out a large amount for insurance that in this instance didnt seem to be of much use.

Is it me , have I read it wrong anyone else used their insurance without first referring to the public hospital system.
