Premium UK Plus Breakdown Cover

Hi,

 

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I am wondering if anybody could offer some advice please?

We pay for the Premium UK Plus breakdown cover, which unfortunately we had to use recently when we discovered a mechanical fault with the van whilst it was parked at home.

Our van was recovered to our local garage by Mayday, however they have not been able to fix the fault, and having called around some other motorhome specialists, it seems nobody else can either, so we are now in a position where we need to get the van recovered home whilst we consider our next move. 

My issue is that we are being quoted £150 for the van to be recovered back home (which is within 10 miles). Surely that cannot be right?

I have checked the policy document which is pretty vague, but nowhere does it list this charge, nor does it go into any great detail regarding recovering the vehicle home. 

Any advice you could give would be helpful.

Sounds a bit strange ,that the fault cannot be rectified, as for the return  recovery I think you need to talk to the club insurance department  as I would think it is a bit of a grey area,, were you going away ?

Unusual situation. I have been recovered home and collected when a slot was available at the garage to take the car in.

Usually the vehicle would be repaired and you would make your own way to collect.

I would follow JVB's advice

I'm going to speak to them again as they perhaps did not understand the situation previously. There are two issues with the van. Firstly it won't go into gear when I start the van. I tried and tried and the damn thing would not go into gear, yet when I turn off the ignition it slots in fine? I then tried to be smart and put it into first and then started the engine to get it going. This worked, but 50 yards down the road it gave up and then wouldn't start up again! 

So there is a potential issue with the starter motor, or an earthing issue (so I have been told) that is stopping the van from turning over, and then the clutch issue. 

The local garage that I had the van recovered have not filled my with confidence and do not seem to know how to resolve the issues other than simply replacing everything, whilst a specialist motorhome garage not far from me have refused to take in the van as they say the parts are like 'gold dust' and they don't have the room... clearly they don't want the hassle of it and have enough work to be getting on with at present. 

So I'm stuck!

To clarify, I have a 1988 Talbot Pilote. The clutch was changed in 2016, and the starter motor was swapped out last year, so other than being cheap parts I cannot understand how they would fail in such a short amount of time. In that time we've done no more than 5000 miles.

The fact that you get get the vehicle into gear when the engine is stopped but not when running does suggest a clutch fault ... but not sure what might have happened when it 'gave up' 50 yds down the road. You say it wouldn't start again after this ..... was it turning over but not starting or nothing when you turned the key? Battery problem?

Why does your motorhome need to go to a 'specialist motorhome' garage? Surely any garage that has the facilities to work on a van will be able to work on your vehicle?

As for getting it back home .... can't a friend/neighbour with a large car/van get it there on the end of a tow rope? You do say it's not too far. wink
