Insurance Values

Hello all,

First of all I hope this is in the right section?

Last year we brought a caravan and I took out 5C's insurance as a little bit of piece of mind and as it was through the caravan club I thought I'd be in good hands (everyone I spoke to was most helpful and friendly). Unfortunately on a trip to France I managed to pull the back end off (long story), but after a lot of sealant I made it roadworthy and we continued to enjoy our holiday.

On returning to the UK I contacted the insurers and made the claim (something that we all hope we never have to do). All was well and I was treated with good service. Ashwick then sent out a chap called Mr Reid from Reid & Co. who was also friendly and he carried out an assessment. All seemed really well until the engineers report came back saying that the caravan was damaged prior to the incident; they said it had been repaired with sealant!! (the sealant that I had used to fix the rear end and awning rails back on with!)

Anyway, Ashwick decided that the caravan was a write off and offered me half of what the current retail value is for a like for like caravan (pre-incident).

Has anyone else had a similar experience and also does anyone know of any independent engineers/assessors that I can employ to come out and give me an unbiased report?

Also if anyone has a 2001 Lunar 615 (preferably Gemini) in immaculate condition without any damp for under £2500 I will happily come and buy it from you today. (although apparently Oxford, Swindon & Reading Caravans will sell them for only £650.00!)

Kind regards

Aaron

If the value offered is less than you believe the caravan is worth then you should check the market on the internet and establish the value from that. You then go direct to the insurers making a complaint and sending your evidence. Ask for what evidence the assessor has to prove his point and say if they cannot justify the offer and they will not improve the offer substantially then you will be taking the matter to the Ombudsman.

Thank you Wildwood, insurance really isn't my thing, I just pay various insurance companies money each month (car, house, life etc) and never think I'll never need it. I have researched the market and realised that this year is a strong year for selling caravans! I'll put forward what you've said.
