Consider using a reputable insurance broker who will have the skill and resources to search the market and find a policy which meets your needs. This applies particularly If your insurance is anything out of the ordinary. The club does not provide insurance advice and does not "review the market"  so its a bit like going to Sainsburys finding that they do not stock the brand of breakfast cereal that you want and buying what they have even though you don't really want it

My home insurance is not via this Club. I got a renewal price from the company  but MoneySupermarket.com gave me a price which was about £80 lower. It was with the same company as before. I took that one.

That's why I think insurance companies just make it up as they go along.

They charge what they think they can get away with not the real cost of underwriting the risk.

The club uses a broker for their insurance provision. Not sure why the OP found them so rigid on price but I would assume the. Insurer involved made the premium fixed.

I would be very reluctant to take the lowest premium on a comparison site as you generally get what you pay for.  My sister took the rock bottom premium and then had a fire. The best that could be said was everything was a problem, nothing happened on time and she moved the insurance at renewal.

Getting the longer unoccupancy cover isnt easy and it has kept me with the club for some years but having doubled the premium in 3 years I tried and found another provider, I would probably still have stuck with them if there had been even a token effort to negociate but there was non, this is so unlike  the industry in general now and if the initial operator does not have the authority to nnegociate the call is usually transfered to some one who can.

I think you will find that certain companies are now simply giving up the negotiable premiums and if the insurer that undwerwrites the policy is one and I do not know who it was then the clubs broker cannot adjust it.

Insurers have got themselves in a difficult situation due to competition which was making the business loss making in many cases. It has not happened yet but I think you will find negotiating reductions becomes harder as companies cannot keep losing premiums the way they have and are realising it has to change.

The basic problem was they quoted low to get you on the books and then upped the premium at renewal to a more realistic figure. People then went onto comparison sites and gotting other uneconomoically low quotes and went back. the insurers who then reduced to match in many cases but they then ended up selling below cost.

We went with the C&CC last December as the CC is rediculously expensive if you have a timber frame house!

The CC quote was far higher (twice as much) than we have ever paid .  Their insurers reckon that our TF home is somehow a big fire risk.

We have never had this attitude from any other insurer in the 29 years since we had our house built.

Time they updated their attitudes.  TF houses are very common up here, and I have not heard that they are more of a fire risk.

Different insurers have different attitudes to timber framed houses. Some accept them at normal rates and others charge extra. I assume that those who charge extra have had problems and prefer not to cover them.

With this type of insurance there can be big differences between companies and a bit of shopping around is worthwhile although avoid the very cheap quotes.

I've had my house renewal from SAGA yesterday. Premium has jumped by 66%. I swapped the caravan insurance away from them a few months ago because of a ridiculous jump in premium. Are they all jumping on the "first year loss leader" bandwagon? Why can't they all just quote a sensible realistic premium for new and renewal and stop playing silly !*$!*!*
