CC Mayday or C&CC Relay Breakdown Cover?

I posted this in response to a poster on another forum who said that he Chose Relay over Mayday as it was cheaper because there were two drivers and 3 cars.

With Mayday I pay £134.50 for both me and OH any vehicle as driver or passenger, £100 each hotel accommodation if needed or free hire car home. homestart, rescue from mud or snow (no extras) chauffeur if I am incapacitated. My cover level is premium plus additional personal cover.

Relay shows as £135 without homestart or car hire/hotel provision if I add homestart then Relay is £186! If I want hotel/ hire car as well then £225. Am I missing something? Do Relay really want £90 more for my level of cover. I have just joined C&CC but will definitely stick with Mayday rather than Relay

In February I had a front coil spring snap and rip through the tyre. We were recovered home and I arranged for Mayday to collect car from home a few days later and deliver to my garage. All part of the service. I presume that Relay does the same?

We have the RAC Arrival through the C&CC because it is the only recovery service that reunite you with your caravan should you breakdown with away from your site and the car cannot be fixed locally.  So they will recover your car, take you back to the site to recover the caravan and relay you home.

If anyone know of any other service that does this, let me know, 'cos it is expensive.

Hi PATMAU, A couple of years ago I looked into this as I needed cover for Europe and was concerned that whilst suggesting that all eventualities were covered the fact was that most providers would not recover the car from one location and return you to the vans location to collect it, indeed one poster stated that he was refused recover of his caravan sited next to his broken down car as it was not attached.

There will always be examples that people can give of someone they knew having a friend who’s uncles aunty got whatever so I took my time to look at policies etc and found only two providers that would provide what you are wanting. I was very interested in ADAC, no longer an option, but they were unclear as to van recovery when not attached. I telephoned both and asked for written confirmation of what they stated.

There were numerous anomalies such as restrictions on length when booked direct but none when booked through and agent but only RP and Safeguard met all my criteria and, as I was renewing my van insurance, Safeguard was the hands down winner.

Last year when faced with a large rise in premium for travel insurance did a similar exercise and and went for a Nationwide Flex Plus Account which provides UK and European breakdown cover as part of the package. I know that this is not to the same level as RP but is equivalent to all other providers that I have looked at and better than most as it has a van limit of 8 metres.

I pay £13 a month and for the £156 a year get travel and breakdown cover that, for travel insurance alone, would be costing app 50% more.

Hi allenandjean,

Here is the statement from the RAC Arrival offer on the C&CC website which is also in the policy document..

A Re-Unite service so if you are away from your campsite when your car breaks down, RAC will take you back to the site within a 75-mile radius to collect your caravan before getting you home.

Posted before I had finished.

Should add, we were brought back from Scotland.  Car broke down.  Not only did they take us back to the site, they said we could go on with our holiday if we wanted, and they would pick us up when we were ready to go home.  We decided however, to come back home and get the car sorted out.  No probs.

Mayday does dual recovery, so if you break down on the way to a prebooked site, they will take you on to the site, you carry on with your holiday, then they will bring you home. When I phoned to ask if they reunited car with already sited caravan in the event of a breakdown , they told me no.

That is why we have Arrival.

Hi PATMAU,I should have been a bit clearer as the main point was that at less than £60, when I took it, the Safeguard beat everything else for price. I don’t need it now as I have  recovery as part time of my car warranty and the cover with my Nationwide account. If I didn’t I would have stayed with Safeguard.

It all depends on the vehicle you want covered, the degree of cover you want and the geographical area cover is required for as to what suits you best. Just make sure you read the small print.

As far as I'm aware, my personal May day cover includes:

1. Breakdown assistance and recovery in any car, even if I am just a passenger.

2. They will attend to my car even if it breaks down at home.

3. They will recover the caravan (no size restrictions) with the car.  If I have my caravan on site and I break down away from site they will sort out a solution.  This includes recovering me to the site and arranging a subsequent recovery home or recovering my car to a local garage for repair.  They do realize the problems.  Similarly, I have been assured that if my caravan is kept locally in storeage, they would recover my caravan to storeage and then my car to home or my local garage.

4. If I breakdown on my way to a pre-booked site, they will take me to the site to carry on with my holiday and then, if the car can't be repaired (in time), they will recover my van and car at the end of the holiday.

I have been assured by the Club that they would look for a reasonable and sensible solution to a wide variety of different scenarios in order to get the member safely home in case of a breakdown.

What I will do is to try and get a response from the Club to this thread.

Regards

David

Interesting, it was a couple of years ago that I rang to find out if Mayday equalled the Arrival offer.  I wonder why they told me they didn't reunite car and caravan.  Is it something they have only introduced in the last couple of years?

If it is then they do not seem to have told us there has been a change.

My understanding of the cover is the same as DSB wrote.
