I'm lost.  Other than adding weight to your holiday box and money to the CC Ltd coffers, what is the point of the plaques?

If you have been a member a long long time it can be difficult to remember what sites you have been to, especially if there has been a name change. A plaque jogs the memory. Mine are all mounted, using blue tac, in the order I obtained them on the inside of the accommodation door.

I agree with the OP, those cheap and nasty badges are just plain tacky..

My OH keeps a diary - simples , also we are no longer members so use C&CC, commercials or go abroad.  Never seen plaques for Aires, etc.
