Should the Club put it's foot down?

It's good that over the last few years the Club has been moving towards being more aware of the needs of our planet and the care of it's environment. Certainly sites like Poolsbrook with eco aware facilities are to be aplauded. The Club rightly should encourage, even expect, it's members to play their part in cutting energy consumption, and think beyond "just me".

Is it then time for the Club to introduce a TOTAL ban on awning heaters on thie sites? No doubt some members will see this as an infringement of their rights. That right being, in this case, to completely ignore the consequences of using energy in what is basically an outdoor space.

And the rest of us can just shut up, stop whinge-ing on, and pay for their electricity wastage in our site fees.

At least some CL owners are aware of this, and have moved to banning awning heaters on their sites.

If gas is cheaper (even allowing for refillables) then I can only assume electric prices are very high.

Indeed they are where we usually tour, anything from 45 to 75 Euro cents per kWh, so even Calor would be cheaper!

We do have refillables and the gas is cheap and widely available, and the heating is more effective on gas.

But environmentally, burning gas is much worse than using green electricity - Extinction Rebellion will be coming to a campsite near you any day now.

Hope so, that can be very painful. Are they ' special needs' ? bless them.

Disagree. They have got more crowded, less spacious, more reliant upon very prescriptive rules and do’s and donts, a lot more expensive, harder to book specific dates, less attractive to those who tour spontaneously, much more commercially orientated and the underpinning age demographic is older. Big loss of small, no facility sites in favour of swisher toilet blocks, hardstandings and hook ups on almost every pitch. Not to mention service pitches. And of course HQ now provides a great deal more services.

On the plus side, it’s ageing core membership finds touring a lot easier than it used to be, which is good, but the Club’s dilemma is still how to attract younger members? On the super plus side, the CL network is still going and giving members like us a lot of options to still tour as we used to do, without all the modern attractions and easy pitch options, at prices we like!

Club is trying options of pods, super pods and more tent friendly advertising. It was rarer to see a tent on a Club Site twenty years ago.

I have no doubt there are less staff trying to manage and administer more on Club Sites. Technology has helped of course.

I think you will find that staffing levels on most club sites have increased in recent years to cater for the much higher occupanosy,

perhaps why the club is investing in pods, to allow the sites to become more profitable and to allow the wardens a little help without resorting to volunteers like your good self.

if anything was an indication of a shoestring run enterprise getting members to clean toilets while apparently awash with funds its this.

a bit rich?wink

i remember when our struggling golf club needed OAP members to cut the fairways with tractor and gang mower...

We no longer use an awning but when we did have one many years ago we did heat it on one trip away. surprised

OH was studying at the time and was using the porch awning as his 'office' one day it took him longer to go through a 'mock exam' than anticipated. This took him into the twilight hours and as such the temperature dropped. He didn't want to come inside and abandon it so I put the fan heater out there to take the chill off. Guilty as charged Gov.laughing

When we tour in the UK its usually in the colder months so no awning used. In the good weather we adopt the attitude if its nice we site outside, when it gets chilly we go inside.

We have come across one site (an AS) that has notices in the office and around the site and facilities block that state ' NO heaters to be used in awnings' on walking back from the facilities one night we counted 3 awnings with heaters (the radiant type) these were on seasonal pitches. It was not winter, just a chilly evening. If an AS site with owners living on site can't 'police it' then a C&MC site generally bigger stands little to no chance.

We also saw once (on a club site) a lady drying her washing in the awning with a couple of fan heaters. We only noticed as she was standing at the door of the awning looking rather warm, we got into conversation, she told us she always does that rather than the use the tumbler as she would 'have to pay for that'

Swiss farm ? Have the Club bought another site ?   Thought this thread was about wasting electricity ?  These threads do wander a bit, hard to keep up.
