Membership Cards and Sites Directories

I have heard rumours but seen nothing in writing.

1. If we decide to remain members, will we continue to receive a plastic credit card style membership card, or will we be forced to download use a phone app?

2. Is the Sites Directory being republished as a paper book, or is this another obligatory phone app?

In another life I was a navigator doing Historic Rallies in a classic Mini. So I have a crate full of maps - mostly with the covers removed (easier to handle in a tiny car) with various annotations on them, including notes and arrows to which map number followed on along the route.

Sorry - totally off topic!

Our collection is very much like yours MethevenšŸ‘

Mine too, as I find it very difficult to see the Whole Picture on a digital map.

My selection in the van for our present trip.

When away, I can happily spend all evening poring over an OS map. They are one of this countryā€™s greatest treasures, and have a background story all of their own waiting to be discovered. We will happily spend an afternoon trying to find all sorts of obscure things off the beaten track, either driving, walking or cycling to it, preferably for a picnic.

I am sure being a connoisseur of all things Cornish Moulesy, like us, you know just how valuable it can be to find one of those ā€œbeat the holiday trafficā€ local runs to get anywhere, and all those hidden coves and paths. We can spend a day on a beach in August down there and not see a soul except passing by on a boat. MagicšŸ‘

Yes we use the technology, but thereā€™s just something special about a paper map.

My collection was recently augmented by a great number of OS maps from my late-in-laws house, some going back over 50 years. I just loved having two fully open at once of the same area and noting the changes. It was fascinating to pinpoint my house from map back then which was just fields. Easily done as we are the highest point in this grid square and by two lanes back then that stills still exist today, although they are busy roads now. One of them is now the footbridge over the A1(M) just north of Washington services.

That’s not off topic, that really interesting about mapsšŸ‘

We have some quite old maps as well Corners, particularly of Cornwall. It’s a County that has seen huge route changes, lots of changing towns and villages, lots of new buildings. We have a map that doesn’t even bypass OkehamptonšŸ¤£ It’s got one of our favourite CLs on it though.šŸ¤£

My collection of OS maps, which predates the digital age and goes back to the 60s, stays firmly in a cupboard at home. I think the last time I bought one must have been in the mid to late 90s. If i want a paper copy of an area, I print it off from the digital versions.

Some of the older ones do make interesting reading for jogging the memory of how it used to be. One of mine still shows Milton Keynes as a village.

OS do some interesting gifts, we have a couple of quiz books we keep in MH. If anyone has someone interested learning how to read a map, they are good for thisšŸ‘ I quite like old maps made into jigsaws as well. In our house, out of date road atlases are used as wrapping paperšŸ¤£

Our sites directory and map arrived today.

We don't have any OS maps.

We do have road map books as backup to the satnav and maps on our phones. Never had the need for OS maps.

Just goes to show how popular the SD is, JK. wink So can you please put in a good word for them and discourage those at HO from considering the idea of getting rid of them.
