We often read on various caravan forums and in other articles about a particular problem with a certain make or model of caravan.

Whilst the caravan is under warranty the supplier is obliged by law to rectify these problems. However, once out of warranty you are generally on your own unless you can prove the particular fault shows that the product was not of a merchantable quality. This can require bringing a case in the County Court.

Very often these faults don’t show until the caravan is out of warranty, some manufactures try to assist with rectification of the problem, but others adopt a ‘don’t want to know’ attitude and don’t reply to requests for help.

Where there are many complaints about the same problem with a caravan could the Caravan Club not use its influence to try to get the manufacturer to do something about it?

Manufacturers use the club to publicise their new models and test them. If a manufacturer refused to discuss a problem affecting a large number of members’ caravans then the club could publish information in the club magazine on the problem and highlight the manufacturers lack of assistance.

All manufacturers wish to avoid bad publicity for their product, the threat of it may push those not responding to customers complaints into action.
