Mayday breakdown Premium service?

We have had Mayday breakdown cover for probably about 20 years. Several years ago we upgraded to the Premium cover which included a chauffeur if the driver feel ill and was unable to drive. We thought we were still covered for the chauffeur service however have now found out it is only included in the Premium Plus package.

Has this always been the case or is it something recent in the last 2 - 3 years?

Subsequent to my previous post I phoned GreenFlag and confirmed that I do have chauffeur cover as it is included both in Premium and in Premium Plus. I pay £134 for Premium Cover and Personal cover which includes cover for me and OH in any car whether as a driver or passenger

Both Premium UK and Premium UK Plus include a chauffeur. The difference is enhanced expenses cover and Pre-departure cover.

Enhanced extra care is an upgrade on extra Care, where the ‘driver care’ element is enhanced to a cost of £150 per person (maximum total £900), but also offers the elements of driver care in combination, rather than offering a choice of one exclusive element.

For example, with extra care, if you choose car hire, you are not then also entitled to overnight accommodation. With enhanced extra care, Mayday will work with you to find which elements can be combined to offer you the best solution.

That is what it says on the CAMC webiste but the policy booklet definitely states it differently and states the chauffeur is only available if you take out the Premium UK Plus policy as per page 10 and 13 of the new policy book!

I have read it and I do receive the Chauffeur cover. Premium Plus adds extra benefits such as rather than either or choices a pick and mix scenario.

Extra care
Extra care provides a range of services that offer even more peace of mind in the event of a breakdown, where the normal recovery option may not be appropriate at that time. This includes the ‘Driver Care’ element, comprising:

Car hire included at no extra cost as an alternative to recovery; OR
The cost for injured persons to continue the journey or return home by alternative transport; OR
Overnight accommodation expenses whilst awaiting repairs;
Up to £100 per person, to a maximum total of £600
In addition, extra care includes:

A chauffeur if the only driver is injured or becomes ill;
Motoring Legal Expenses up to £25,000 and legal advice included at no extra cost
A telephone message handling service
Extra care is only available for the Premium UK cover level.

The Premium Plus gives Enhanced Extra CAre

It does not Surfer.

Read the online policy booklet here

 https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/globalassets/pdfs/insurance/Mayday-Policy-Wording-2018.pdf

Premium UK page 9 says "Also includes Extra Care - see page 12."

Premium UK Plus page 10 says "Also includes Extra Care - see page 12."

Extra Care on page 12 says "See Driver Care on page 13"

On page 13 it says there are 4 additional options if purchased Premium Plus, but the Chauffeur paragraph is after those options and covered by both.

By the way, the online booklet and the one sent differs in page numbers.

Thank you for the explanation.  It seems that i misunderstood the way it is referenced and obviously it created a concern for us.

You were right to question it anyway after the poor show regarding 'getting us, the caravan and car home safely'

They still have not been able to verify anything concerning that issue despite promises of phones calls from Mayday!  Mayday insist that we never answered the phone when we called and stated that they called the home and mobile numbers.  A check showed that we were at home all day and night when they were supposed to have called.

We received the renewal documents yesterday and quoting from page 13 of the new policy booklet "Driver care (Only applicable if you have purchased Extra Care). This now comes at an Extra cost!  It does seem that Mayday is constantly moving the goal posts!

Goes on to state "Provision of a Chauffeur" and summary states that you will have to show medical certificate at the time of the illness or injury.  This could be very difficult if you are in hospital and to get a medical certificate you will need to find a doctor plus you will have to pay for the certificate.

Seems very onerous especially if it is your partner that is left with the caravan and vehicle and they have a B+E inherited through grandfather rights but have never towed in their life and do not feel competent to tow a large unit i.e. 4x4 and twin axle caravan.

For the past year or two we have assumed that the chauffeur cover was included in the Premium package.  Does any one have access to last year or previous years policy book so they can check to see when it changed?

I did enquire to Greenflag/Mayday in September 2013. We were on the Lidalia Site at Newcastleton and I woke up one morning to find that I had lost 80% of the vision in my right eye including the main focal area with just a little peripheral vision at the top of the eye. As that had been my 'good ' eye I was no longer able to see to drive without correction. I made the same enquiry and received the same reply that athough OH was a qualified driver the fact that she was not prepared to drive the car and had no towing experience or confidence meant that a chauffeur would be supplied if required. I was able to get suitable cheap reading glasses in the local chemist however that made it possible for me to drive home and attend my local hospital in Chester.

Good afternoon all,

Just to clarify:

Provision of a chauffeur is part of the ‘Extra Care’ package, which includes three elements: a 24-hour telephone advice service (detailed on page 12 of the Policy Wording); the ‘Driver Care’ element (detailed on page 13 of the Policy Wording); and the UK Legal Expenses service ( also detailed on page 13 of the Policy Wording).

Extra Care is – and always has been – inclusive in the Premium UK cover level – and is also included in the Premium UK Plus cover level. If you have Premium UK, you will be entitled to all aspects of Extra Care – including chauffeur cover if required. There is no requirement to pay extra, and no need to upgrade to Premium UK Plus to benefit from chauffeur cover if required. Premium UK Plus simply includes enhanced entitlement limits via Enhanced Extra Care.

I take on board that the heading on page 13 of the Policy Wording could be clearer, and I will take this into consideration during the next review of the Policy Wording to help make it clearer and easier to understand .

In terms of the requirement of a medical certificate, we are aware that in some cases, this could be hard to come by (out of hours, emergency situations etc.). Green Flag will always judge each case on its individual merits. So, for example, if it is obviously impossible to obtain a medical certificate, this would not automatically equate to a refusal of service.
