is the Club about touring or static holidays?

Reading the latest magazine I was annoyed to read an AGM comment that motorhomes are causing problems because they stay on a site for a few nights and spoil the opportunity for a week's booking.

Personally all the people dashing to book in December for next year spoil my opportunity for going away on a whim and touring, stopping off for a few nights then moving on to pastures new.

To answer the OP, the Club is not a “touring”  Club. Any site that allows all its pitches to be pre-booked can’t be described as touring friendly. This is not a criticism, just a statement of fact. There is such a short season in the UK when the weather is good and such a lack of quality sites it is no surprise that people clamour to book Club sites at weekends and holiday times.

If I wanted to genuinely tour the UK in holiday periods it would be a logistical nightmare to pre-book all the sites, then, if I wanted to change my plans on the move it would be almost impossible. Since I am not inclined to book any site at any time (except on very rare occasions) it effectively means I cannot tour in the UK. Hence we always head straight for Le Shuttle to that magical land where no booking is required.

Sorry to contradict you HG, but we tour throughout year, including school holidays, only in this country, and always find a pitch somewhere. Usually at a very good price as well. Granted, we may not get onto Rowntree Park on a Bank Holiday Monday, but then we don't limit our options to such narrow windows.

Same advice to you lornalou. You will get a pitch, but it just might not be the exact pitch, at a popular site, on your set date. There are lots and lots of options available. It all depends how many individual preferences, barriers etc.....you need to consider. Which is not the Club's fault, but down to individual needs.

When our children were young, they are now in their late forties,it was far easier to go where we wanted at short notice during the "peak" periods, but since the "explosion" of leisure vehicle sales, and now in the UK what seems a shortage of pitches, especially in the more popular holiday destinations, then booking is very much needed both here and over there, to save on the already, it seems, high stress levels of modern day livingundecided

then booking is very much needed both here and over there,

Thats never been my experience but then  I dont travel July and early August to destinations such as the Cote D'Azure.

I did an 11 week tour earlier this year starting mid April, stayed  on 13 sites (two of them twice) and only booked one  and that was to ensure I got a particular pitch for 6 weeks. I rang ahead  just the once to a small remote site without an alternative nearbye.

Apart from our first trip when we made the usual beginners mistake and went to the South of France in July I have never since in nearly 40 years been turned away from a site.

Even then there are regular posters here such as Valda or. Hitchglitch who have regularly done just that toured  at high season without booking

I think if we still needed to be confined to the peak school holiday periods ,and had what seems to be the stresses of today's family life then I would be sure of our, holiday we would book in advance

I might do myself if it was in that very tight "window" of around 6 weeks in July and August and I was determined to get a place on a popular site but outside those weeks it absolutely is not needed but then in the UK I never leave home without

In the UK it is normally not a problem off peak apart from the frenzy sites

well, this thread has got me somewhat worried about my future holidays. I bought a van because this is all I can do now that my wife has a brain injury so joined both clubs to get good sites to stay at, but  I cannot book in advance as soon as they open the books as don.t know how she will be at that particular time and I think I will struggle to get a site because of the selfish diehards that have their finger ready on the button, so will have to hope private sites can accommodate us or just sell up and live a life of misery sat at home.
