is the Club about touring or static holidays?

Reading the latest magazine I was annoyed to read an AGM comment that motorhomes are causing problems because they stay on a site for a few nights and spoil the opportunity for a week's booking.

Personally all the people dashing to book in December for next year spoil my opportunity for going away on a whim and touring, stopping off for a few nights then moving on to pastures new.

Not in our experience. If sites are closed, they are closed to both. If open, then open to both.

But this is going way off topic on a matter of pedantics.

To return to what was my point>>>

I've forgotten......

Yes, which is what I wrote originally; you took issue with that - and confused me mightily.

This was the post. I think it is clear:

"This idea of "flexibility "in the UK is still tempered with the thought that you have to check and (possibly) book, even at one or two days' notice.

While we do it when we have to, it still does not allow the total freedom which is the norm "elsewhere", and so we find it can be a bit irksome.

"Elsewhere", there isn't even any need to check, for if one site is full, there is another nearby with room. And, when we motorhome instead of using  the caravan, there is the added possibility of a Stellplatz / an Aire  / a Sosta.

Having said that, we set off tomorrow for 2 months in Portugal and Spain and, yes, we have booked some, but not all, sites. That's because sites can - and do - get full in Winter in the southern areas. It does go against the grain to do it in truth, but occasionally it is necessary (for us).

Thus, our flexibility lies not so much in being flexible about where to go in the UK, but in knowing when it is desirable / sensible to book, wherever one is touring."

If the UK, as posted so many times,we had the space ,and as many sites even the verry short season of some, there would not be what some perceive as so much of a problem, and as you say the UK does not have the facilties for the proliferation of motor caravans that is available else where

Thank you BB.

(I was beginning to think, what with horrendous rain through France, and now snow in Spain en route to Portugal, not to mention a dreadful cough, that I was losing any grasp of logic! Page 11 reads like a tortured exchange from Alice in Wonderland.)

I understand what you mean about page 11 and it seems you must havetongue-out

Flexibility is turning up unannounced and after a quick walk around inspection  staying as long or short as one likes not to  be confused with booking or calling ahead.

I have seen calling ahead  described here as a courtesy call, there is nothing courteous about pestering a site manager to ask for a pitch when its certain that there is no need but this  is almost unknown in the UK and at times positively frowned upon .

Travelling in Spring and Autumn we have never needed to book but have on a very few occasions  done so because  we are not stupid and we were aware of local events such as the Chalons en Champage agricultural show or a particular favorite of ours in Germany that we know to be busy last weekened in August. On a few other occasions we have booked at site with plenty of space because we wanted a particular pitch.

This is with a caravan so nothing to do with Aires or Stellplatz.

Yes I do, 'bad feeling' might not have been the right choice of words but I am sick to death of the constant bickering on here and other forums between caravan owners and motorhome owners.

Like many we have owned both, I have never to my knowledge looked down my nose at either group.

We are often being 'told' that one or other is doing it wrong, whether its  a MH is using a water barrel, or that caravanners are using their cars instead of taking the bus or walking. Now we have MH's are stopping caravans from having a week away.

The terms that are used to describe each others groups are less than friendly. MH's refer to caravanners as  tuggers or wobble boxes, while caravanners call MH's freeloaders and now pitch blockers.

Maybe I'm just having a sensitive day but I wish this constant bickering would stop and just let folk enjoy the hobby whichever way they choose.

Would we go around criticizing how someone has their furniture arranged in their house, or that they are not using their car in the way it was meant to be used.

If that is all folk have to find fault with then I pity them as they obviously don't have a very interesting life.

Rant over.
