Booking early/late

I was somewhat confused by a letter in the April edition of the Club Magazine.  The writer started by saying that she had just booked their summer holidays, but how did she manage to do it so late??  Late? I thought - but it's only March - that's early!

She went on to praise the Club's booking service and observed that with a bit of flexibility, sites were generally available.  I heartily agree with this and have found that booking more than a week or so in advance was rarely, if ever, necessary.

Now that I have taken early retirement, I can be as flexible as I please, but even when I was working, had a young family and my wife was a school admin officer, booking sites was never a problem. When we went to Europe with the van, we only booked the ferry - never the sites as we never knew where we would be on any particular day.

I know that some people will like to spend the long winter nights planning the next year's holidays, but that's not me.  I think the main attraction of holidays (caravanning or otherwise) is the flexibility to go where and when you want at short notice.

If I have to start booking months in advance - I'll just give up!

ps. No idea where I'm going this year, but the van's ready to roll when I am!
