Hay-on-Wye is situated in the Welsh county of Brecknockshire, just on the border with England. It is within the Brecon Beacons National Park and close to the Black Mountains.
This makes it the ideal destination if you're looking for a walking holiday, as there are miles of trails, including those up Hay Bluff and the Twmpa.
The other thing Hay is known for is its books. It is the National Book Town of Wales and hosts the annual Hay Literary Festival in June, when thousands of bibliophiles descend to hear authors and buy new titles. With around two dozen bookshops in town too, you're sure to find something to read.
Other Hay highlights include walking tours guided by locals, Hay Castle, Hay Market each Thursday and locally-made Shepherd's ice cream, which offers seasonal flavours like lavender, damson and fruit crumble.
There are numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants to choose from at the end of a day's activities too.
