The Scottish town of Kirkintilloch is situated in East Dunbartonshire and, thanks to its location on the Forth and Clyde Canal, is known as the Canal Capital of Scotland.
For this reason, it's ideal if you fancy a narrowboat-based British break or just like to walk alongside tranquil waterways.
There's also much to see in the town itself, particularly if you're a history buff. The Antonine Wall is a World Heritage Site and runs through Peel Park where a Roman fort once stood.
A museum called Auld Kirk also houses scores of exhibits pertaining to Kirkintilloch's past, as well as temporary events focusing on particular periods or items.
It isn't all about history, though. The town also has an excellent shopping centre called The Regent and a wide choice of eateries are conveniently situated nearby to serve you after a spot of retail therapy.
Don't miss the Kirkintilloch Canal Festival if you happen to be visiting in August, with events centred around the popular marina.
