Situated in Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish town of Dalbeattie lies in the Urr Valley and is known as the Granite Town of South-West Scotland because of its prominent granite industry.
It's favoured by anyone who enjoys energetic outdoor pursuits on their British breaks, as there are opportunities for hiking, fishing, golfing and mountain biking, among other things.
Indeed, Dalbeattie is listed as one of the 7stanes world-class mountain biking centres because of its challenging granite slabs, so it's well worth checking out.
Elsewhere, there are a number of castles and historic houses within easy reach and Dalbeattie offers many independent shops and fantastic places to eat.
You can also find out more about local history in the museum, notably former Dalbeattie resident William McMaster Murdoch, who was First Officer on the RMS Titanic and went down with the ship.
