The market town of Castle Douglas is situated close to Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway. It's hugely popular with walkers thanks to its beautiful scenery and range of paths to choose from.
Heading from the town's park to Carlingwark Loch, visitors can continue along Lover's Walk to a marsh where waterfowl can be viewed from a hide. It's also possible to carry on hiking to Kelton Hill and Threave Gardens, and even to Threave Castle - although the last part of the trip to this attraction must be completed by ferry.
Back in Castle Douglas, it's easy to get refreshments, as this is one of Scotland's designated Food Towns. You'll be able to enjoy Italian, Chinese and Indian, pub meals or takeaways, meaning there really is something for everyone.
For shopping, don't miss the independent boutiques along High Street that are mixed in with the big-brand names.
In July each year, Castle Douglas hosts Civic Week with its charming carnival, and there's the Stewartry Agricultural Show every August.
