The market town of Huddersfield is situated in West Yorkshire, where the Rivers Colne and Holme meet. It is famed for its key role in the Industrial Revolution and is a place rich in Victorian architecture as a result, including the awesome railway station and Victoria Tower on Castle Hill.
There is more history at Oakwell Hall, an Elizabethan manor house featured in the Charlotte Bronte novel Shirley and said to be home to at least one ghost.
If you like the supernatural and sinister, you can also follow the 'Shuddersfield Trail' to discover spooky stories while walking around town and the Dewsbury Heritage Trail to learn more about the town's connections with the Yorkshire Ripper.
Huddersfield has a range of independent shops as well as the big-name brands if you want to spend a day indulging in some retail therapy, plus there are lots of places to choose from when it comes to places to eat and drink.
If you happen to be visiting in December, don't miss the annual Huddersfield Festival of Light, while summer visitors can enjoy July's Caribbean Carnival.
