The busy moorland village of Castleton is one of the largest villages on the moors and is a hub for local services.
The bottom part of the village, Castleton Moor, houses the Esk Valley Railway Station, linking Middlesborough and the seaside town of Whitby and passing through the beautiful moors and past pretty villages. You can also find the Eskdale Inn Public House, near to the Esk Bridge, in this part of the village.
A winding road takes you to the top part of the village, passing the remains of a Norman motte as you go, to the main street with tea rooms, art galleries.
The oak furniture in the church on the edge of the village was designed by Robert Thompson. Known as the “The Mouse Man of Kilburn”, the furniture features his distinctive hallmark mouse carving.
