Lancaster is a city situated in the English county of Lancashire, right on the River Lune and not far from the coast at Morecambe Bay.
Despite its city status, it has a compact layout that makes it feel especially welcoming and easy to navigate. With Lancaster University just five miles from the city centre, there are also plenty of local amenities that mean holidaymakers will be well catered for.
Must-sees for visitors include the castle, where witch trials were carried out in the 17th century. You can now look around as part of fascinating guided tours that even see guests shut in the dungeons.
Other highlights include the free City Museum, the Maritime Museum and the butterfly house at Williamson Park just a short walk away.
There are excellent shopping opportunities at St Nicholas Arcades and down Lancaster's many alleyways and an array of bars and restaurants to choose from, whether you want a few drinks on a Friday night or a relaxing meal on a Sunday afternoon.
The university also hosts fun events year-round and a range of exhibitions in the Ruskin Library.
