The town of Wigton is situated in the English county of Cumbria, just outside the Lake District and nestled between the Solway Coast and the Caldbeck Fells.
This makes it the ideal place to head to for a walking or cycling holiday, with numerous excellent routes and trails right on the conurbation's doorstep.
Within Wigton itself, there's a pre-medieval street plan that you can explore using a booklet published by the Wigton Civic Trust entitled A Walk Around Wigton, which was partly researched by pupils from the local primary school.
Other landmarks in the town include the elaborate 19th century fountain and the Highmoor Bell tower, which used to play tunes three times a day during the Industrial Revolution.
There are a host of shops in Wigton and a covered market each Tuesday, as well as plenty of pubs and cafes for meals.
The town is also within easy reach of well-known locations like Cockermouth and Keswick for further exploration of the region.
