Kendal is a popular and attractive town known as the Gateway to the Lakes, and it makes a superb base for exploring the southern part of the national park.
Windermere, England's largest lake is just four miles away and offers a myriad of attractions ranging from watersports to steamboat rides.
However, visitors to Kendal can avoid the crowds and enjoy some of the quiet corners of the national park that are often bypassed by tourists rushing towards Windermere. The Kentmere and Longsleddale valleys offer outstanding walking, with the Kentmere Horseshoe a particular highlight. Nearer to the town, Scout and Cunswick Scars provide some fine limestone scenery.
Kendal itself has a ruined castle, while Sizergh Castle is located just south of the town.
