Once a leading powerhouse in the country's steel industry, Consett is now a peaceful town offering fabulous views of the Derwent Valley.

Many new industries have moved into the region, including The Explorer Group - the second largest manufacturer of caravans in the UK.

However, there are plenty of nods to the historic past of the area, with many of the public houses in the town named to reflect the influence of the steelworks and there is a popular pub crawl route to find out more.

Consett is also home to the Empire Theatre, which is one of the oldest in the region. As well as showing the latest films, the venue also hosts various live performances throughout the year, including a popular Christmas pantomime during the festive period.
