The perfect brunch stop: Falling Foss Tea Gardens, North Yorkshire

The charming seaside resort of Whitby lies about 15 minutes’ drive from the site, offering a wealth of attractions. Top of the list is Whitby Abbey, the remains of a Gothic wonder that inspired Bram Stoker when writing Dracula.

North Yorkshire Moors Club site is the perfect spot to unwind and get into the Yorkshire vibe. It's only a short stroll to the Falling Foss Tea Gardens and waterfall.

Also nearby is the harbour and town, where you’ll find plenty of independent shops and cafés (as well as award-winning chippies). You could also spend a pleasant hour wandering the streets around Robin Hood’s Bay where you can admire the cottages, flowers and sweet little shops. 

Cycling heaven on The Cinder Track and through Dalby Forest

For something a little more ‘off-road’, just a 20 minute pedal from The Fox and Rabbit Inn CL near Lockton is Dalby Forest where you can choose from a variety of routes, from the family-friendly to the absolutely bonkers. If you're looking for a middle-of-the-road option, the six-mile Jubilee Blue Trail is excellent fun.

There is a cycle path from Robin Hood’s Bay into Whitby called The Cinder Track that goes through the North York Moors National Park.

Climb the steepest road in England, also known as the Chimney Bank

The Howard, Rosedale Abbey Club site is a little slice of Utopia. Set in a pretty village, there's a friendly pub across the road and two delightful tea shops within 100 yards of the entrance.

Mix all that with a variety of walks affording stunning views and what more could you ask for? Chimney Bank shares the title of ‘steepest road in England’ and makes for a breathtaking walk. You can always cheat and drive up, continuing over beautiful moorland to the ridiculously pretty village of Hutton-le-Hole where there is a charming folk museum and a number of gorgeous cafés. 

North Yorkshire Moors Railway - as seen on TV

One not to be missed is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which has termini at Pickering and Whitby. Consider alighting at Goathland Station to explore the village where the TV drama, Heartbeat, was set.

A visit to the ancient market town of Pickering is a popular day out from both The Howard and our next site – Wykeham Grange CL. The latter offers electric hook-ups and stunning views but you’re probably going to need a vehicle to get to most attractions.

You can also embark on a couple of walks from the village – either to Grosmont Station up the line, or a triangular ramble taking in Mallyan Spout waterfall.

Exploring Sewerby Hall - 50 acres of garden, woodland and a small zoo

Next on our itinerary was the redeveloped Bridlington Club site. The site is popular with motorhomers thanks to the hourly bus service that takes you right into the town where there are amusements and fish n’ chips joints aplenty along with a quaint harbour.

Also within walking distance of the site is Sewerby Hall where you can easily spend the entire day, meandering around the beautiful house, enjoying the 50 acres of garden and woodland or visiting the small zoo. One of the biggest draws in the area is the RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs - admission is free to Club members– where you’ll see puffins and the most amazing display of gannets.

Stepping through history; York's old cobbled streets of The Shambles

No trip to Yorkshire would be complete without visiting York. On this particular trip, two bases were used to explore the city: Red House CL –  the kind of small site most members dream about – followed by York Beechwood Grange, which is situated next to the park and ride service into the city.

York is home to more attractions per square mile than any other destination in the UK, apparently, but my favourite pastime is to simply wander. You can lose yourself among the overhanging timber-framed buildings of The Shambles and the Museum Gardens, working your way from café to café and delighting in the cosy independent shops. 

This tour of Yorkshire lasted three weeks, yet you may still come away feeling like you've barely scratched the surface. The sign of a good holiday is a yearning to return, and with that Andrew says "I’ll be back"!
