Whatever kind of getaway you’re looking for in your next holiday destination, Scotland has it all. Whether you want to explore the rolling countryside of the great outdoors or experience the culture and history of the bustling cities, there is plenty for you to discover in Scotland that you’ll need to come back again and again!
Certificated Location sites (or CLs) are independently owned 5-van sites that offer a quiet, secluded feel, that are exclusive to our Club members.
Here are four handpicked CLS in Scotland that you need to visit:
1. The Crofter's Snug, Highlands
Located in the far north of Scotland, situated between the stunning Dunnet Bay and the infamous John O’Groats, is The Crofter’s Snug CL in the charming town of Thurso. Positioned only 1 mile from the NC500 route this popular CL boasts stunning sea views and pleasant walks to the Castle and Gardens of Mey as well as cliff-top walks to St. John’s Point. A visit to Orkney mainland is a must, with the closest ferry port only 2 miles away at Gills Bay.
There are some great must-sees’ in the town of Thurso itself including the circular wellhouse of Meadow Well, the impressive Janet Street which overlooks the River Thurso, the Swanson Gallery which hosts year round exhibitions and Caithness Horizons hosts fascinating museum exhibits and an ever changing gallery programme. A paradise for watersports lovers, the beaches have plentiful reefs and is known for its consistent year-round surfing, and after an adventure packed day, head to Dunnet Bay Distillery for a tutored tasting session of their delectable Rock Rose gin and Holy Grass vodka.
2. Gartfairn Farm, Loch Lomond
Set on a working livestock farm, Gartfairn Farm CL is a peaceful retreat nestled in the heart of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park in the Stirling area of Scotland in the south. The rolling hills don’t just make an idyllic backdrop, there are also dozens of amazing walking trails and hillwalks to discover. Less than a mile away from the site is the village of Balmaha which sits on the banks of Loch Lomond and is the perfect place to pick up a scenic boat trip around the islands and the picturesque village of Luss.
As Loch Lomond is a freshwater loch, it’s not tidal which means lots of activities like kayaking, boating and canoeing can take place there, as well as open water swimming. It’s also an extremely popular choice amongst anglers and is known for being one of the best spots for fishing in the UK. Of course there’s no better way to experience the vastness of the 71sq km of Loch Lomond than by getting on the water itself, with plenty of options from speedboats to boat tours. This will give you time to admire the breathtaking surroundings as well as the opportunity to try and spot some of the UKs rarest wildlife like Kingfishers, Red deer, Buzzards and Fallow deer in their natural habitat.
Staying at Gartfairn Farm CL is an excellent location for history buffs too, as the ruins of Buchanan Castle which dates back to the 17th century are less than 10 minutes drive away. Other fantastic attractions nearby include the Glengoyle Highland Scotch Whiskey Distillery tour and the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre.
3. Ardlui, Isle of Arran
As an adults only CL, Ardlui offers a peaceful setting with stunning views of Lamlash Bay, Goat Fell and beyond. Located on the Isle of Arran, an island of the west coast of Scotland, it’s a must-visit for lovers of the great outdoors with attractions so varied and diverse there’s plenty for everyone to take part in. Two miles south of Ardlui CL is Whiting Bay, a popular seaside village with a variety of places to eat. There are also plenty of forest walks in the area including the renowned trek through the woods of Glenashdale Falls, the island’s impressive waterfall or head to the Viking grave mound at Kingscross and see the remains of a 2000 year old fort.
Three miles north of the site is the pretty village of Lamlash, which sits in a bay facing the impressive and historic Holy Isle. Between the months of April to October, you can take a ferry trip out there and discover the spiritual history that dates back to the 6th century. Eriskay ponies, Soay sheep and Saanen goats inhabit the island, alongside a rich variety of wildlife, whilst you might catch a glimpse of seals sunning themselves close to the shoreline at Lamlash. Activity seekers can enjoy the plenty of watersports, golf, tennis, bowling, yoga and walking. For the ambitious amongst you, you could even walk a section of the spectacular Arran Coastal Way.
4. Carr's Hill, Stirling
Although set in the rural countryside surrounded by farmland, Carr’s Hill CL is easily accessible from all directions making it a perfect site for visiting Stirling or Loch Lomond and The Trossachs. With its peaceful surroundings, it’s easy to see why Carr’s Hill CL has won numerous CL of the Year awards over the years.
Carr’s Hill CL sits adjacent to an ancient Roman fort, of which its named after, and has many beautiful parks nearby to explore including the Plean Country Park and Wellsfield Farm Park. Just 15 minutes’ drive away is the fascinating and historic city of Stirling. Discover where one of Scotland’s most defining battles took place with the Bannockburn experience, marvel at the glorious fortress of Stirling Castle that was home to Mary Queen of Scots or head to the famous the distinctive Wallace Monument and see William Wallace’s actual sword.
20 minutes south of Carr’s Hill is the town of Falkirk where you can experience the worlds first and only rotating boat lift in the Falkirk Wheel. There’s also the Helix, the 350 hectares of parkland that is also home to The Kelpies, the world’s largest equine sculptures that stand at 30 metres tall. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Antonine Wall, the largest relic of the Roman occupation in Scotland that was built around AD142 and stretches right across the country from Clyde to Forth. Afterwards, why not try out a ‘wee dram’ of the new Lowland Whiskey at the Falkirk distillery.
