Motorhome and Campervan Cameras & Sensors Poll Results

We reveal the results of our cameras, sensors and manoeuvring aids poll.

In our last newsletter, we asked you to give us feedback regarding the use of cameras, sensors and other manoeuvring aids on your motorhomes. As ever, we got a great response, and here’s a round-up of what you told us.

Of the nearly 550 people who responded, a significant 77% of you use parking cameras, while 34% have parking sensors and around 6% use additional mirrors. Just over 13% of you answered that you do not have any form of manoeuvring aids on your motorhomes.

Nearly 60% of these aids were factory-fitted, of which the majority were included in the price of the vehicle, with far fewer added as an optional extra. Another 35% were after-market products that were fitted post-purchase.

Not surprisingly, nearly all of you said you use them primarily for parking and/or moving on to a pitch, with a smaller number also using them for turning around. A small but significant number of you also use a rear-facing camera as a de facto rear-view mirror while driving, or as a way of checking that a trailer, bike or even boat is still attached to the back of the van - smart!

Of those of you who said you don’t have any form of manoeuvring aids, the primary reason for not doing so was expense. Now we don’t want to get preachy, but think about the expense of repairs, or the increase in your insurance premium, for the want of the price of a camera.

When asked what advice would you offer your fellow motorhomers and campervanners who do not currently have sensors or cameras, almost everyone who responded - nearly 250 of you - said, simply “Get some!” It’s reassuring to know so many of our members are responsible and experienced tourers, who take the safety of themselves, their vans - and other road users - seriously.
