You don’t have to be an ardent fan of motor racing to enjoy the Silverstone Interactive Museum, it’s a terrific family day out. Ten captivating zones – offering visitors the opportunity to experience the diverse eras of British motor sport – are housed in a restored WW2 RAF hangar right next to part of the original Grand Prix circuit. If you step outside the rear of the exhibition you can walk the heritage track trail, and you may catch a glimpse of the action on the current circuit.
Our visit kicked off on the first floor with a thrilling pre-show on a virtual grid from which we emerged, hearts racing, into the museum for an introductory history tour. This began at the medieval abbey and ended up in the Second World War airfield – it was really fascinating to discover the origins of the names given to Silverstone’s famous straights and corners. We learnt about the site’s past as a Bomber Command training base and about the amateur enthusiasts who sneaked onto the old airfield for some clandestine racing – their use of the empty runways eventually led to the staging of the first Grand Prix.
Downstairs, we found ourselves in front of a replica pit wall listening to first-hand accounts of how to run a busy race day, then ventured on to grapple with the science behind the sport in the Tech Lab (and got to put together our own racing bike!) Finally, after strolling around the Racing Eras zone – packed with some of the most significant cars and motorcycles to have ever competed at Silverstone – we took our seats in the special-effects cinema for the “Ultimate Lap” end show, an exhilarating succession of iconic Silverstone moments with an all-star commentary team. It was quite a ride!
