Explore the popular town of Rüdesheim am Rhein. A row of restaurants and gift shops face the river, but venture one street back and you’re met with a scene that wouldn’t look out of place in a Disney film thanks to fabulous old buildings.
There is plenty to see and do in the town. Traditional German cuisine can also be enjoyed at reasonable prices, as can local beers.
After purchasing cable car tickets in town, find yourself admiring the incredible scenery. At the top is the Niederwalddenkmal, a monument built to commemorate the unification of Germany.
The views are stunning and the monument sits above vineyards – predominantly producing Riesling. You can make your way back down on foot.
You can either purchase a Ring Ticket, which allows travel on a nearby chair lift and a 40-minute cruise in addition to the cable car or alternatively book a boat trip to Rheinstein Castle.
Built in 1317 and now owned by the German government, a small tractor and trailer can take you to the top of the steep path if you don’t fancy the walk. The castle is eerie and it’s impossible to visit without sparing a thought for the craftsmen who built it.
