Best Winter Sun Spots in the Algarve
Marcus Leach and his family continue their tour through Portugal in search of some winter sun in the Algarve
Think of winter sunshine and where does your mind go? Maybe to the Côte d'Azur in France, perhaps the Costa del Sol in Spain or even the Amalfi Coast in Italy. All fantastic choices in their own right, but have you ever considered Portugal?
If, like us, you find yourself craving a little bit of winter sunshine while it’s dark and cold at home, then Portugal’s Algarve region is the ideal location to enjoy long, lazy days full of warmth and adventure.
As much as we loved our time touring in the north of this fascinating country, Exploring the Wild Beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park, the Algarve provided the ideal contrast to give us the full Portuguese experience, including lots of great weather.
With so much diversity in the Algarve you might be left wondering ‘where are the best spots?’ Here is a selection of our favourite places to not only enjoy a winter tour, but also showcase the best of the Algarve region.
Best Winter Sun Spots in the Algarve
- Tavira: There is no shortage of quaint little towns along the Algarve coast, even if some do get overrun in the hottest summer months. However, out of season, Tavira is perfect for those who want a relaxing, off-the-beaten-path winter destination. With its beautiful architecture, quiet beaches, and pleasant temperatures, it offers the perfect escape from its busier neighbours. Highlights include the Roman Bridge, Tavira Castle with panoramic views, and historic churches like Igreja de São Sebastião
- Albufeira: Perhaps the most famous of all the old fishing villages along the coast, Albufeira, with its white-washed houses and narrow cobbled streets, showcases some of the best regional architecture. The many picturesque sandy beaches to be found in and along from the town, with soft sand and clear turquoise waters, are inviting all year round. Highlights include Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen's Beach), Albufeira Marina and the Old Town.
- Cacela Velha: The small coastal village of Cacela Velha has a long and storied history dating back to Roman Times, although today it is better known for its pristine beaches (it’s home to some of the best in all of Portugal) and traditional Portuguese architecture. Hardly surprising, given that it’s on the coast, it also offers a variety of traditional Portuguese cuisine, with a strong focus on fresh seafood. Highlights include Cacela Velha Castle, Ria Formosa Lagoon and Praia de Cacela Velha.
- Sagres: Nestled at the south-western tip of Portugal Sagres is a beautiful and rugged coastal town that offers an authentic and peaceful winter escape. Popular amongst surfers, fisherman and winter motorhome travellers there is something for everyone here, although for us it was the warmth of the locals, as much as the sun, that made us feel so welcome. Highlights include Cabo de São Vicente for spectacular views and sunsets, Sagres Fortress for maritime history and Praia da Mareta for a day at the beach.
- Monchique: For a different experience in the Algarve we recommend heading inland and up into the mountain town of Monchique. The fact that the weather here can be a little cooler and less predictable should not deter you from taking the beautiful drive up here. In fact it can offer a welcome change to the sunshine, walking in the lush forests, taking in the traditional architecture and savouring local mountain cuisine. Highlights include Mount Foia Observatory, Alcalá Waterfall and thermal springs at Caldas de Monchique.
As for where to stay while in the Algarve, look no further than the exemplary Turiscampo Camping and Bungalow Park, which is on the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s European network. Without doubt this is one of the best sites not just in the Algarve, but all of Portugal, and is the ideal base from which to explore wide and far in the region.
