We have recently returned from a 3-day trip to The Courts Campsite. It is well-laid out and quiet but sadly wasn't one for us. There are several reasons:
1. Our dogs did not like the pea gravel on the pitch, so spent most of their time in the van.
2. Dogs have to be exercised offsite; not an issue as such, but I was concerned about getting dogs offsite first thing in morning & last thing at night, without any "accidents".
3. We didn't get to meet the owners/wardens at all, as apparently they were away, which did seem a bit off-putting.
4. Noting TV reception was poor, we bought our Roku stick with us, but this wouldn't work due to poor internet signal. We did make use of the free wifi, which is kindly provided, but seemed to use up our allowance with more than 1 hour TV programme a night.
5. We chose pitch 3 but found this to be very shady. Weather was very mixed during our stay but the pitch didn't get any sun while we were there due to trees.
I appreciate other reviews are excellent, and one certainly can't please all the people all the time, but we won't be back.
Quiet and relaxing
Our first trip away with our dogs and one can be reactive. I spoke to Paul before we booked and he was really helpful and happy for us to book.
The site is quiet with plenty of space between each pitch. There are a number of walks from the site and Paul suggested a walk to the river. There is a pub 5 minutes from the site and they welcome dogs.
Owners are really friendly and helpful. Will definitely come back. A beautiful site and our first experience of a CL.
Peaceful Site
Totally agree with others, very quiet, clean and welcoming, would recommend.

Booked here with ease via the website, great directions, and what a beautiful, well run site. Met with Paul and his wife, the owners, very friendly and helpful, site has everything you need, with bags more, two pubs nearby. Great walks and a tea shop at Papermill Lock, definitely worth a visit, thanks Paul
Excellent CL - the best
This was a fantastic find. Extraordinary level of calm and peacefulness. Brand new. Walk to the pub. Fully serviced pitches and a very helpful host, Paul. The gardens at Hyde Hall are a must see. Thanks very much. Will be back. Graham
Little hidden Gem
A great little CL Site, little difficult to find thanks to Hubby’s rubbish directions. Set amongst ancient woodlands which was very much appreciated during the heatwave - kept the caravan lovely and cool. Owners keep their Motorhome on site so often about to chat to they were Very helpful with suggestions of places to visit. Each pitch is fully serviced, TV poor but using the sites complimentary WiFi we could get a decent service. Lots of lovely places to visit in a very pretty area of Essex. Nice peaceful site surrounded by nature. Would deffo recommend the courts CL.
Our 4th visit and we will go again and a.....
Perfect site for relaxation and recuperation!!
We have been 4 times and each time find a new walk having walked miles in the surrounding woodlands and area.
The owners are so welcoming and friendly They listen to any suggestion to improve their already amazing large serviced pitches. There are now wild flowers growing on perimetre ground and future plans for the shady area.
Great site and area for humans and dogs alike!!!
What a jewel!
My second visit to this amazing site. I defy anyone to find a better one. Fully serviced hard standing pitches in idyllic surroundings. Friendly, welcoming owners on site. Excellent walks through peaceful woods and also down the hill to the River Chelmer with a riverside cafe. Two minutes walk up the lane to the local pub with a great food menu. I’ll definitely be back!
What a wonderful site
This is a wonderful CL which obviously is owned by people who are experienced motorhome/caravan owners as the site has everything you need.
Good sized gravel pitches divided by shrubs. Individual electric bollards with lights plus water to the pitch and a security bike rail. There are lovely walks from the site and the local pub offers tasty meals. If visiting in the winter remember a torch as it’s a short but dark walk from the pub. Unfortunately we got rather lost leaving Little Baddow as there was a road closure due to road works and the lanes aren’t well marked/sign posted as well as being fairly narrow in places. However all this does lead to the adventures of driving a motorhome and won’t deter us from returning next year.
A Little Belter!
What a find this site is! We stayed for two nights and had the BEST time! Check in was seamless thanks to Paul’s slick online booking process and excellent communication. The site itself is well kept and spotless, as it’s all brand new with high spec equipment. The pitches are spacious and private, and give you the feeling of being surrounded by nature, whilst only being a five minute walk from an excellent pub/Italian restaurant. My favourite feature of the campsite is the wild flower area which Paul has recently added - a definite hit with the bees and insects! Paul is a genuinely top notch chap, friendly, professional and eager to help make your stay as comfortable as possible. We spent the day at RHS Hyde which was only a short drive away, and did some fabulous walks from the site up to the lock with its tea room. I honestly can’t think of anything that could be improved, and we’re definitely going to return so I can visit the Beth Chatto gardens nearby. A big thumbs up from us!
