Autumn walks

Autumn is a great time to explore the changing beauty of the countryside. Feel the crunch of the leaves under your feet, breathe in that cool fresh air and delight at the kaleidescope of golden colours. We have plenty of sites open throughout the autumn and winter and it's a great time to go touring!

Yorkshire

 

Think of Yorkshire and you'll see rolling green hills and pastoral landscapes. Visit in autumn to see the lush green countryside transform into its winter guise.

Visit:

  • Fountains Abbey, Ripon
    This World Heritage Site owned by the National Trust houses a Cistercian abbey, Georgian water garden and medieval deer park.
  • Thorpe Perrow Arboretum, Bedale
    See the trails, glades, bays and avenues of Thorpe Perrow come to life with colour this season. You can also enjoy autumn tours, fungus forays and family fun as well as meet the birds of prey.

Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds

 

Famed for its quaint villages, historical towns and stately homes and gardens, Gloucestershire is perfect for a little getaway this autumn.

Visit:

  • Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucester
    The National Arboretum is renowned for its autumn colours and is considered to be one of the best tree collections in the world. This stunning grade one listed historic landscape comes alive with colour in the autumn and is a must-visit.

Where to stay:

Dorset

Explore the beauty of Dorset and discover everything from historic castles to spectacular beaches. It's a popular spot for TV and film productions, including ITV's Broadchurch, so you might spot some familiar locations.

Visit:

  • The Jurassic Coast
    This long stretch of coastline has millions of years of geological history to its name, with many fossils found in the cliffs and rock formations. Visit two of the more prominent landmarks; Durdle Door and the layered cliffs at Lulworth Cove.

Where to stay:

Kent

Known as 'the Garden of England', Kent is bursting with fun things to do. The area boasts not one but two areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty so you're spoilt for choice.

Visit:

  • Bedgebury National Pientum, Goudhurst
    During autumn the autumn colours come alive against a backdrop of evergreen conifers at Bedgebury. Walk around the pinetum or cycle round the forest for an adventurous day out. There's even a Go Ape experience nearby.

Where to stay:

Peak District

Famed for its breathtaking views and great walking route, the Peak District is stunning at any time of year. Visit during the autumn for an added touch of magic.

Visit:

  • Longshaw, Burbage and the Eastern Moors
    Incredible views, ancient woodland and heather covered moorland are the mainstays of this area. There are many walks in the area where you can enjoy the beauty of the season, why not take some sandwiches and lose yourself on a long walk.

Lake District

The Lake District is famed for its lakes, forests and mountains, making for beautiful walks. It also has literary associations with the likes of William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin all having ties to the area.

Visit:

  • Coniston Water, Cumbria
    Wander around Coniston Water, the third largest lake in the Lake District, and take in picturesque views as the season transitions. There are three small islands to explore, all owned by the National Trust, for a lovely autumn walk.
