#XploreMore 2014 - Task 38 - Make a kite and fly it

This story happened on: 05/08/2014

It’s been a couple of years since the girls have made a kite, so the task of making a kite required us all to think back to what a kite needs in order to fly.

The basic requirements are:

  1. a wing (made from lightweight material)
  2. thin string to attach to the kite to the person flying the kite
  3. a tail (this adds stability)
  4. Sticky tape (for quick, lightweight attachments)

Amy went for a simple paper winged kite, made from a sheet of paper.

Ella made a rectangular wing, with sticked side supports, made from a plastic carrier bag.

Of course, flying the kite is the fun part - especially when it flies! NB. if the kite doesn’t fly the first time you fly it, take a look at the design and try and improve it - it’s trial and error. This is a good lesson for children as it encourages them to persevere and not give up.

After a few tweaks, Amy and Ella had great fun running up and down the Rosedale Caravan Club site with their kites flying behind them.
