Black Horse Farm

This story happened on: 27/05/2017

Many members stay at this site just for the single night en route to the continent via the Channel Tunnel or the Ferries, but should you linger for longer, this part of Kent has much to offer.

My visit over the May Spring Bank Holiday was marked with some un-seasonal lovely warm and sunny weather which was ideal for visits to the beach with the kids. Found some nice sandy stretches at St Mary's Bay where it was relatively easy to find somewhere to park and only a short walk onto the sand.

Our visit also coincided with a WW2 weekend put on by English Heritage at Dover Castle so we pre-booked and had an enjoyable day watching all the events that were put on. Unfortunately, what we had not bargained on was the crowds and we were not able to get to the underground tunnels due to the numbers queuing but that said, it did not detract from an enjoyable day.

For those that like steam railways, Kent has three namely, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch, East Kent and the Spa Valley all within a short car journey of Black Horse Farm. Before going though, it is worth checking their respective websites to look up the times of services.

For those that like walking, I'd recommend parking the car in the National Trust car park at Langdon Cliffs (follow the brown NT signs from the A2). The views across the Channel are worth it alone and if you fancy a stop, the Fan Bay Deep Shelter is an interesting visit. If you feel very fit, carry on to the lighthouse. For those that like a more sedentary lifestyle, you can watch the comings and going in Dover Harbour where there is always something going on.

In our week away, we only scratched the surface of what is available. We will re-visit again.

We have stayed at Blackhorse Farm many times on our way to the ferry/tunnel and I am sure you are right that there is much more to do in the immediate area. For those that don't want to take their vehicle off site there is a very regular bus service from near the site entrance. There are some photos of the site here although headline photo is now out of date as they are built a near reception block since out last visit.
