Fab site for a stop over

Lovely site that we use when travelling further North. The site is conveniently just off the A1 which is great for travel, but road noise is an issue. The walk from site down to the river is beautiful. The female warden was lovely and welcoming on arrival. The toilets were nice and clean and showers were very large. I personally wouldn’t want to stay here long as it’s not very tranquil but Durham is well worth a visit.

Grass Pitch

A lovely clean site, well situated BUT beware if you have a grass pitch and want to put up a awning. You will be told to lift the carpet EVERY day even though you have a proper breathable awning carpet. It is checked and you are told off if you do not do it. Will not be coming back terrible attitude of 2 of the wardens.

Good for visiting Durham

Perfect location for Durham and other locations in the North East. A little noisy but there is not much that could be done about that and you soon seem to put it to the back of your mind. Facilities block clean and well managed w.r.t. Covid precautions. It was quite windy the afternoon we arrived which brought home it's somewhat exposed location, however, once the wind dropped we had a very pleasant stay. The Park & Ride for Durham is close by and is very useful, however I would not try to walk to it.

Good clean site but !!!

Stayed here last week the site was lovely and clean it was an ideal base for visiting family in Newcastle. We were asked to lift our awning carpet every day which was checked by the wardens when we went off site. The site is ran by two couples one couple were lovely the other couple need to remember they are in the hospitality buisness and maybe need to think about another career possiblely the prison service. We will not be going back.

Good site but won’t suit everyone.

Standard CMC site offering all that members would expect. The site is mainly level and well maintained with grass areas still firm in mid September. This was my first CMC site since lockdown and they seem to be coping well with all the impositions of the new normal. Many previous reviewers have mentioned traffic noise. Yes, you can hear it, but for me it’s background ‘white noise’. It’s constantly there but after a while you don’t notice it. Certainly not as intrusive as some noise annoyances experienced on sites. For many, the reason for being here will be close proximity to Durham and motorhomers in particular will be attracted by the park & ride nearby. However, as others have mentioned, accessing the P&R site by foot is not for the faint hearted. Firstly, it’s an unpleasant 15/20 min walk with cars and lorries thundering past you constantly. However, the thing to note is the 4 very busy roads and junctions you’ll need to cross. Some are relatively safe offering a refuge between the carriageways and/or traffic light controls. However, a couple of them are potentially dangerous and best avoided by anybody who is not agile and quick on their feet. The most dangerous section is on the return leg at the final crossing towards the campsite. It’s safer to continue on the grass verge beyond where the pavement stops giving you more time to see and judge approaching traffic speed before attempting the crossing. It can be done, we lived to tell the tale! It is possible to park a motorhome at the P&R, no height restrictions and plenty of spaces towards the back of the site. £2 ticket into Durham.

Near Durham but Park and Ride challenging to get to.

This site is near Durham and as a motorhomer the Park and Ride would be the obvious way to get into the city. However, you need to cross busy roundabouts to get to it and having done it once, never again! We come here to visit family and on our second visit we opted for a taxi, we used John Haggarty (07962130500) who lives near the campsite. We found the wardens welcoming and helpful, with just one occasion when a warden became a bit frosty because I wanted to get water while he was cleaning the service area, ok, these are weird times and we all get stressed. The site is noisy because it is near the motorway, and I would not go here for a relaxing holiday, it is a convenient location for the city. Well done to the wardens for keeping the facilities clean and accessible during these difficult times.

Good for Durham

This has to be one of the easiest sites to get into I've ever experienced. Straight off the A1 and turn onto a short wide road to the entrance. Brilliant!! The pitches are well spaced and we had plenty of room for van, car and awning located close to the amenities block and service point (although we did have to go past another pitch at the gable end of the amenities block or face a long walk around the road - please put a path in!!) We picked this site to explore the area and it is close to quite a number of tourist places like Beamish, Durham etc. The Durham Park & Ride, while very handy, is close but please don't attempt to walk there or you will be taking your life in your hands crossing so many busy roads. The ladies and gents were limited to three people when we arrived but at the end of our visit this was raised to six. This caused no problems at all and people were quite good at social distancing so we felt safe. The site is immaculate and facilities very clean so well done team. We did have a nice time but the bad weather and attractions which were closed or had limited interest (don't bother with Durham Cathedral it is a waste of time and you get pestered for donations) meant we curtailed our trip. I have to mention the noise from the adjacent road and A1 because it is intrusive 24 hours of the day. If you want peace and quiet don't come here.

Unfriendly, unhelpful and uncomfortable

The person booking us in was totally miserable. He was unhelpful and actually made our stay really unpleasant. Too many pitches were booked to be conducive to safe COVID protocols. The noise from the road was awful. We cut our stay short and moved to a farm site we have used before in the area. We won’t be back.

Lovely welcome back to touring!

We haven't been touring for three years but Durham was one of our regular stops. I remember why! Lovely friendly staff who keep the site immaculately clean. In light of the pandemic things have changed but everything was very well organised to keep everyone safe. Information was given on entry and there was written information around the site. Loved the band system for use of the facilities, a simple but very effective system. You can hear some traffic noise but it's nothing too major. Thank you for a lovely reintroduction to touring. Will definitely be back.

A nice convenient site

This is a nice site. It's green and leafy, surrounded by trees and there are grass and hard standing pitches to suit all. Sure there's the constant hum of road noise from the A1 but it's unobtrusive. There's a small dog walk, the usual facilities and a welcome from the staff. It's ideal for visiting Durham and surrounding areas. We just drove into town and parked in the multi-storey, no problem at all as we were avoiding public transport during the pandemic.
