Another nice stay

We stay here usually twice a year once at the beginning of the year and once at the end of the year. We were a bit later this time but it was as good as usual. The facilities were immaculate even though the site was fairly busy. We'll be back at the end of the year.

Not quite an A1 site

On our recent stay we found like others a first class welcome and facilities up to the usual high standards. The closeness to the A1 is both handy but slightly noisey especially at peaks. The dog walk is fine, the chidrens play area looks ok.  The only downside was the internet strength, I understand its a rural connection but the charges are the same as a top class connection and therefore they are not worth the fee. I feel that this is something the club should look at. Otherwise a pleasant stay.

Good site for caravans

This site is ideally suited for people who wish to break their journey north or south due to its location close to the A1(m). The main drawback of the location is the motorway noise which seems worse in winter due to the lack of foliage on the trees around the site. Having said that we found the noise fairly un-intrusive due to it being a steady drone.  If you have a motorhome without a car in tow be prepared to drive to leave the site or risk life and limb crossing the roundabout to access the nearby park and ride (which stops operating after 7pm) There is a walk to Durham city from the site which can get muddy in wet weather and is totally unsuitable to use after dark. For those with cars or who don't mind taking their 'vans out there are many fantastic attractions nearby. I would highly recommend the Bishops Palace at Bishop Aukland which is often overlooked in favour of more popular locations. I don't have children and can only guess that most youngsters would soon tire of the small playground and riding their bikes round the site but there are many good places to take them off site. The dog walk is adequate but not enough for proper dog exercise. Overall a well kept site with friendly helpful staff.

Service with a smile.

We have stayed at Durham twice this year already. On both occasions the site lived up to its reputation. On our second visit last weekend we had one of those moments!! We had collected our van directly from being serviced and went straight to site. All seemed ok until the electric cable was connected. Nothing, not a spark or flicker from anything. After much growling and connecting and replugging still nothing. Then a helping hand appeared form nowhere, well the wardens office anyway. A tester was located, supply confirmed at post, cable tested at van end all with power available. after resetting all switches and trip contacts, sorted!! Do we need wardens with a logical mind? I certainly did!! Thank you very much indeed. Apparently the service included winterising the van and closing everything down on it ready for winter, in February, when our season had already started, eer, thanks guys.

A local site we just keep going back to

This site isn't too far from our home, and as it's open all year round it's a simple answer to the question "Do you fancy a few days away in the 'van?" The site is close to the Park and Ride into Durham, and your P&R ticket also allows free travel on the bus from the market place up to the Cathedral and Castle. Once you've exhausted all that Durham has to offer, you are right next to the A1 so it's easy to head north or south to explore the wider area. If you are simply passing through, the site is an ideal stopover as you are heading north or south. We will be back soon!

Lovely site----but-----

This is a lovely site with large flat pitches, excellent facilities and welcoming wardens. If you are a motorhomer and rely on public transport we would not recommend this site other than as a stopover whilst travelling north or south via the A1M.The walk from the site to the bus stop or park and ride is wholly unsuitable for pedestrians and in our view extremely dangerous. It involves crossing a busy dual carriageway and the entry and exit slipways of the A1M.We were surprised that the club actually recommends this as a suitable option. Also there is residual traffic noise all the time and lorries visiting the adjacent council yard to be loaded with grit day and night.

Tranquil Site

We just spent a lovely 3 days at the site - it was the school holidays but it was not too busy. It was close to Durham City for a visit and yet so close to the A1 for travelling. It is only a short distance from our home but a lovely place to go to and relax.

Location v. Noise

This is a great site, within 200 yards of the A1. It is clean, tidy and well laid out. Durham city centre is 3 miles away, with its cathedral, castle and riverside. We enjoyed a visit to a show at the Assembly Rooms - the student theatre for just £7 each. We also went to Sunderland to see a show at the Empire Theatre (park at Bridges multi-story for a 2 minute walk to the theatre) and on another trip to the National Glass Centre, which was excellent and free of charge! Beamish open air museum is about 25 mins drive from the site - 25% discount on presentation of your Caravan Club membership card! The location of the site is brilliant for these trips out. On a practical note head towards Durham on the A690, take the first exit (Dragonville/Belmont) and turn right when you get to the roundabout where you'll find a retail park with Pizza Hut and KFC, as well as a B&Q! A little further beyond this turn left at the lights and follow the road until you find a Tesco extra with an Aldi next to it. The down side of this CC site is undoubtedly the noise - the constant drone of traffic on the A1 was joined on icy nights by the noise of the council gritter depot which is next to the site. However, we did get used to the noise and think the advantages of the site do out way this.

Good location

Very good access to the site from the A1,but this contributed to the road noise. The wardens were very helpful in putting us in a sheltered spot as it was very, very windy, whereas the trees sheltered us from the wind, they made a lot of noise, which kept us awake although you can't blame anybody for the weather. Access to Durham is excellent as there is a Park and Ride only a 5 minute drive away. Also went to Seaham which has a good beach for dogs.Speaking of dogs,it seemed a little strange that you had to keep your dog on a lead on the dog walk! However, great site will be back.
