One of our favourite places

We have been staying here for a number of years now, it is truly a hidden gem. A fantastically warm welcome by the owner who is a mine of information about all the great things you can do locally. The beach is within easy walking distance as are local shops for the things you always forget! There is also an excellent pub just up the road with reasonably priced meals if you don't want to cook. The local bus service from the road outside takes you straight to Lymington or the other way to Christchurch. You will never be short of things to do. As other reviewers have mentioned there have been lots of improvements lately at this little site. Some trees have been trimmed so lots of light and sunshine for those barbecue evenings. A truly relaxing site with a very friendly owner who is eager for you to enjoy your time there.

Regular visitor

As a regular visitor to Oak Cottage C.L. we would like to say that the site gets better every visit. A lot of improvements are being made all the time. A perfect location for using Public Transport and seeing areas around the New Forest. The short walk to the local Pub makes it all worthwhile.

Excellent location

Kirstie Allsopp would like this site. It's all about location, location, location. It is very near the bus stop with hourly services to Bournemouth in one direction and Lymington in the other. The pub is only about 400 yards away. You are off the beaten track so it is peaceful. The trains have never disturbed us. The owner has recently had the trees trimmed and the site is light and bright. It is an easy walk down to the beach and the shops at Highcliffe are not far away.We had spoken to the owner previously and she gave us all the information we needed for arrival. We love it and intend to return whenever we can.

Great Site for Christchurch

I have stayed at this site a number of times over the last seven years. The site is well situated for visits to Christchurch, Highcliff and the New Forest. The local beach is within walking distance and there is a pub a short walk away. There is also a row of local shops a short walk away which includes a newsagents (ideal for the morning papers). Each pitch has an electric hook-up, fresh water is available in front of the cottage and the toilet emptying point is in the adjacent paddock (the emptying point has been upgraded recently to a purpose built item with easily removable lid). The site has suffered from its popularity in recent years. The wet weather and the increased use use of awnings has on occasion led to poor grass on the pitch. On my recent stay in April 2014 the site had changed quite a bit, the access turning into the site had been widened, most of the tall trees surrounding the site had been cut down and the small copse adjacent to the pitches had been cleared. This gave the site a more lighter open appearance. There is a railway in a cutting not far from the site but it has never bothered myself or my wife (modern trains are very quiet), the dawn chorus from the birds is louder. I have found this can be a popular site so phoning ahead is a must.

Very Disappointed

When we arrived at Holly lane, which you can easily miss as the sign was hidden by overgrown bushes, also there is no cl sign which would greatly help as you are approaching a bad right hand bend on a busy road. We were asked the day before we arrived if we would park the car and van on the main road and walk up the lane,{ which is actually a narrow bumpy track cum railway bridge} to the site to make sure the pitch was vacant as there was no spare holding space on the cl!!!! With us parking there all the traffic had to pull over to the wrong side of the road which they were not happy about as it was on a bad bend on the road. The site itself for most of it is just a narrow strip of well worn grass and soil!!! If you are on pitches 1 2 or 3 and have an awing to erect with anything other than a small van you have a problem as you are limited to space with other members having to pass by you with there cars. Pitches 4 and 5 have slightly more room but are nearer to the main line railway track, which at this point on the site is very close by in a cutting slightly below the site. The trains are passing by from 6 30 am to nearly midnight. Two of the 5 pitches were occupied by people who were working in the area and leaving for work at 6 30am and 7 am every morning. with this and the train you were assured of an early morning call every weekday!!!! The site is surrounded by large overgrown Trees and High Bushes, with no views at all and no sunshine until early evening. The emptying place for your toilet waste was basically a bricked up hole in the ground with a lid on, I did not mind this, what I did object to was the terrible stench there was every time you lifted the lid to empty you waste!!! Whilst we were on site a couple arrived who had booked and paid a deposit, took one look at there allotted pitch and about turned and away they went not impressed at all !! The site owner could not be contacted as she was not at home. We were told of a couple doing the same the day before we arrived. Anyone thinking of using this site, if possible look before you book.

Compact CL

Firstly, you are not really looking for a lane but a track, which is very easily missed from the road as the sign is set back a bit and not very visible (but it does say lane). The lane itself is very narrow and bumpy and leads to an electric gate to the property. The CL is not really a field, more a small strip of land making the pitching of five caravans very compact. Enclosed by trees & high hedging you get little sun until the early evening. There is a train track not far away which can be heard, although not a major concern. LocalPlacesOfInterest is the key for this CL as it is close to Christchurch, Lymington, The New Forest and local beaches. What was extremely rude was another caravan arriving for our pitch at 10am when we were not due to leave until 12noon. They proceeded to pitch their large caravan in between us & our neighbours’ motor van awaiting our departure, which we felt was intimidating. Though apologising for their early arrival (even though they were staying for a month) they apparently do this every time they visit this CL, thereby disrespecting other caravanners' and the CL owner should be more forceful in their arrival time as there is no spare holding area available & other people have already paid for that pitch.
